195/50/16 tyre options?

Post by DJ » Wed Mar 16, 2016 6:28 pm

You may have thought there couldn't possibly be another tyre related topic that could require it's own thread, but I think I have found one.

This is the tyre size for the front (7 double-spoke forged alloys) of my Exige S. As I need new rear tyres I was looking at potentially replacing the full set and moving away from the T1R's. However, I see Yokohama don't do AD08 or AD08R's in this size which is what I would ideally want. Looked at the newish Toyo R1R's and they aren't made in this size either. Don't really want to go to full R888, R888r's or A048.

Alternatives?

Are those rims wide enough to take the AD08R in a 205/45/16?
That's what I've got on your old Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2s which are 7x16 but not sure about the OEM wheels.

I am not sure of J size. Think they are 6.5. To me the 195/50's look reasonably full on the rims already. I didn't really notice any difference in ride or clearance between the 16" wheels with 195/50's and the 17" TDs with 205/45s. I imagine 16" with 205/45 would mean I might start clipping sleeping policemen etc. as car is sitting on lower suspension too.

Sorry Mark, can you check something for me? My reply to you may be nonsense as I have in my head that my old TDs were 17" fronts and 18" rears. Now wondering if they were same size as the forged wheels, but possibly the forged are a smaller J.

I think you should use 205/45 in place of 195/50 - it's only 5mm difference in front ride height. Just make sure your number plate is the lowest point at the front :-)

Cheers,
Robin

I've just stuck a set of ad08rs on my exige s. Lowers the nose very slightly. Car feels great on them and works in the wet and in the cold.

The TDs are 16x7J front & 17x8J rear. I think the fronts are a bit wider than the OEM wheels.

Yes, 5mm is nothing. I had in my head the track wheels I had before with 205/45's were an inch bigger than the OEMs so I would be dropping a lot more, but that's cleared up now. A 6.5J should easily take a 205. :thumbsup

Number plate is already curled at bottom under the splitter from a few clips and bumps around the Edinburgh cobbles.
