Painting brake disks

Post by Ferg » Thu Jul 02, 2015 10:47 pm

I always like the painted finish that MMC put on brake disks they fit. The result is that the disks don't rust up as quickly. I'd like to do this myself, any tips? I'm most interested in how to do this without getting paint on the friction service, and of course what paint to use. I was thinking along the lines of making a stencil to paint them with high temperature paint.

Anyone done this? :)

Going to have a go. :)

Don't paint your brake discs. They won't work.

(I tried Farrow and Ball emulsion and it really affected the stopping distance.)

I always thought they painted most if not all of the disc and then let brakes take off the excess.

That would gunge up the pads. Had a look and there are a number of guides of varying quality on masking the braking surface. My old S1 (still have trouble saying it, sniff) had the disks done at MMC and a year later they still look great.

That is what they do :thumbsup Most franchise garages do this when they check you brake pads. Just spay the disc centre and let the pads scrape off the excess.
Couldn't believe it first time I saw the doing it but common practice and doesn't seem to do your pads any harm.

I done this with my boxster a few years ago - not the callipers as they were Already red - the hub part - sprayed it silver smooth rite - the brake pads took off the over spray.
However I fancy painting the callipers on the exige now
I always thought the boxster ones were powder coated & the word Porsche was screen printed on
