Re: cough stop dead
So sorry to hear this Jim, rotten luck mate.. I had the timing belt done when I had it and the clam was off... Fingers crossed no other damage! Kiwi Rog will be the man for any headwork if required? opporchancity to get the head flowed? http://www.sabre-heads.co.uk/1.html I always wanted to get the head done but didn't have the patience to have the car parked up for any length of time
I hope you get it sorted soon at minimal expense mate!

Cheers Mark, yeah it's a total ballache tbh, I really don't need this just now.
Any ideas what some Kiwi Rog would likely charge for some head work? I only had a quick glance but couldn't see it on the website. It's something I had on my list to do and you're all right this is the best time to do it, but it will entirely depend on costs as quite honestly I'd be spending money I don't have just now.
Cheers

Re: cough stop dead
Don't quote me but maybe £600 or £700, prob depend on if any damage to the head/valves? I'd get head off, inspect then give him a quick call.

Re: cough stop dead
Sorry to hear that Jim, KiwiRog did my head back in 2012/13
Rough costs were:
KR1 - £750 plus £25 for p&p
Gasket set was around £150 and £80 for the head bolts
Can't remeber how much the belts were, didn't write them down
Also bought cams
Redressing Followers £35
Newmans PH2 Cams - £335
Verniers - £150

Re: cough stop dead
Jimbo, I have a complete S2 VVC160 head lying here unused in case it turns out that's a cheaper route to repair than replacing valves/valve guides - I was going to get it made into a solid cam conversion but my plans changed.
VVC is a fiddly beast - I suspect you'll have bent some valves. If AA will trailer to MMC that's likely to be easiest route to getting it replaced properly and without causing more damage (there have been numerous botched VVC rebuilds).
Alternately you can strip your head, replace any bent valves and then rebuild with new oil stem seals - I don't think that should be all that expensive, if a little time consuming. It's not that bad a DIY job, though you need to pay attention to a lot of details or you will make your problem worse - so not good for your first spannering job
Given your statements about finances I wouldn't spend time/money at this stage on getting any head work.
Cheers,
Robin

Hi Robin,
I've been giving it some thought and I'm going to get it taken to JD Motors in Insch (though I've not called them yet) who did my engine mounts. They're really knowledgeable and tbh their hourly rate is about half what MMC is, plus I have a few other things that could/should be sorted at the same time, such as a leak from the main engine oil seal. I'll get him to strip it down and take it from there. If the damage is really bad, I might be on the scrounge for a new head...., if it's not too bad I might contact Kiwi Rog and discuss some work to the existing one but I won't really know anything until we can guage the damage. I do fancy a KR1 head, always have, so might see what my credit card can stretch to...
I'll keep you all posted
cheers

Re: cough stop dead
All good - head isn't going anywhere so it'll be here if you decide you need it.
Good luck - fingers crossed damage is not too bad.
One thing to keep in mind - Rog takes time to do anything, often months, so if you are going to send the head down to him you'll need to be sure that JD motors are happy to store the car for you (and that they have somewhere suitable to keep it out of the elements).
Cheers,
Robin

PS:- tut, the AA guy said he was up at you recently changing a batteryjimbo wrote:Drum roll please.... Timing belt has snapped. Honestly gutted.
I've got AA repair cover so that should cover up to £500 of the bill, but I presume it's an engine out and full strip down job?
