out of my depth - without wiring

Post by jimbo » Sat Dec 14, 2013 1:33 pm

So my new headunit arrived, just removed the old one thinking it'll be a super simple unplug old and plug in new. Eh, no. The connectors are different sizes, and there's a heap more wiring than I thought.

Any experts in/near Aberdeen fancy wiring it up for me? Many beers would follow :thumbsup

Thanks in advance guys

Can you not buy an autoleads loom adapter from halfords or is it bullet connections?

Hi mate,

If I could get my stupid Photobucket account to play ball I'd upload the image I took of it. Seriously don't have a clue where to start...

Take the new radio and the old one to your local accessories shop, show them the backs and they will sell you the appropriate adaptor for a token sum.

There is probably a wire coming from the car which has a plug on the end. Onto this there may already be plugged an adaptor, if you unplug this you may discover that the remaining plug is actually the one you need and fits directly to your new radio. Or you may find that it never works again.

One of those definitely.

When I get some time again I'll see where I can take it, but this is what I'm on about:

Now if I'm missing something and this is actually really easy then please say :blackeye

You can see on the bottom right the existing plug, but the new headunit accepts a much bigger plug

You need to diconnect the loom from the connector block pictured at the top of the pic then buy the relevant ISO adapter from above, cant remember what model it is from.

Did the new stereo not come with a loom? Usually its a straight swap for the elise connectors.

/\ what he said
I thought I had a similar problem when I changed out my head unit a couple of years ago but was actually ready to plug and play.
If it s the same as mine the 'dusty' plug in your pic (next to the aerial lead) will unplug / split and your head unit will plug into the half thats wired into the car ( thats how mine worked anyway :? )

As above split the black plug that's sitting in the cage still... the bit in your hand is stereo specific and your new unit will have one with it which should plug straight into the plug resting in the cage :thumbsup Good luck!

To add to the above, and really just a precaution.

Once you buy the correct adaptor to the ISO Standard (Black) plug, turn the stereo on and save a radio station then turn the ignition off. If you're loosing radio stations (or memory) the battery and Ignition feeds are round the wrong way.

There is two + feeds into any stereo, a constant 12v for memory and a switched 12v (from ignition) to turn the stereo on. This is the yellow and red wires in the picture above. If you're loosing memory, swap them round. :thumbsup

Just incase, as you seem new to this sort of thing.

Is it worth disconnecting the battery while doing stuff with the wiring?
