S2 Exige Gear Box Oil Change

Post by martins » Tue May 14, 2013 5:13 pm

After Kinger's gearbox issue and hearing that gearbox oil should be changed on a regular basis if tracking a car and that it makes the Yota change easier have decided to give it a go.

Drain plug on the box is obvious but the filler hole not so? Advice or pictures anywhere? Previous thread?

Also while I am at it am considering changing the engine mount dampers. Again advice or previous thread advice welcome.

Thanks.

I have (Redline MT-90 75W-90 GL-4) gearbox oil if you want...
Think I paid £90 for 6L, you'll need 3 (2.3L capacity).

...and went for these mount inserts:

Have the oil and mounts on order. Did not realise the mounts were in addition to the one already in there. Thought I had to remove the ones fitted etc, which I do not really have the tools for....

Many thanks for the advice.

if you put the correct amount in a squeezy bottle and pump it in, it is reasonably easy to get it in without dropping anything.

sort of squeezy bottle and tube.

I'm using these 'Inserts'. They're very easy to fit and not quite as solid as the a full bush upgrade  :thumbsup

Easy enough if you are about three inches wide....

Best to use axle stands on rear, as that's the bit you'll be working under. (and where all the weight is)
Jack up rear, axle stands, take out plug, the lift front to keep car level. Fill g/box.
It's not the easiest, but take your time and it's easy enough.
Swearing is optional, but sometimes advisable.

If you're anywhere near me (Glasgow area) let me know and i'll arrange access to a garage ramp for you. Saves a lot of messing about.

Thanks for all the advice, offer etc.

Got the gearbox oil and the damper inserts done over the w/e. Stuck the car on ramps and used a very large syringe (autosave) to fill the gearbox. Turns out that you can buy cheaper gearbox oil than Redline and it comes with a syringe tyoe system fitted to the 1L bottles. Other than accidentally squirting myself in the face with Redline at one point all was relatively straightforward.

Was it worth it? Full chat gearchange from 2nd to 3rd is now a lot easier but the vibration through the chassis at idle is very noticeable. Does this get better once the damper inserts have 'settled in' or is that it? Will I leave the setup 'as is'? Probably will as do not really do a lot of stop/start in the car.

Worth approx £100 and 3 - 4 hours time? Yes.

I think the vibration will continue. I've not noticed it diminish in the 2-11...
