Suction mount for iPod Touch

Post by campbell » Wed Nov 07, 2012 1:09 am

Considering some in car video capture at Oulton and Anglesey later this month.

For simplicity, wondering if a mount is available which would let me use the iPod Touch (whose video is surprisingly good).

The glass screen of the iPod would lend itself well to a suction mount. So is there such a thing as a "suction to suction" device?! The iPod screen would be facing inboard, preferably (because the rearward facing camera provides a lower-res result than the outward facing one).

In simple terms, a mount with suction cups facing both ways would work for mounting on the rear window looking through the cockpit. However the angle of view is a bit wide - although this would do as a fallback. Therefore a windscreen mount will probably yield a better result.

Then I found this:

Thoughts welcome. Apart from "go buy a GoPro"....which is simply out of the question.

Not saying it wont work on a "normal car" but I tried something like this in the Lotus and it got shaken off every 10 seconds :(

Campbell; I'm of the 'can't justify a GoPro' contingent.

I have a pikey sat nav mount I can bring, which would work with your iPod Touch:

(You could adjust the position of the iPod, so as not to be obstructed by the mount).

Another option, is a cheapy DV camera like this one:

Obviously the quality isn't great - However, given the disposability at the price, you could mount it to the front towing eye using tie wraps / a little foam behind to cut some of the vibration down.

I used this set up on my old MX5 at Knockhill last year - Here's a sample:

(Yes; that a VMAX of 90mph on the pit straight... :blackeye )

The tow eye is offset to the side on the Mazda, so results would be better on an Elise...

Brilliant, Ross, let's give that mount a whirl! "Disposable" mini DV cam on the towing eye almost seems crazy enough to work but this ain't Team Techno, you know, so I may sit that one out ;-)

Mikey, fair point on being shaken off...will report back :-)

I'll be trying it too - Just bit the bullet and ordered an iPhone 5 (seems they've improved Apple maps, which was the main thing dissuading me).

It can handle 1080p @ 30fps and has inbuilt IS - Looking forward to giving it a go... :)

As for shaking the mount off - If you can avoid taking too much kerb at Foulstons, I'd imagine you'd be okay. (We'll tether it, anyhow!)

You're also welcome to try the Team Techno tow eye camera - I tended to carry a pair of wire snips in car, so if I needed a tow out the gravel / wall, I could remove the camera quickly & easily
