Tyre foam old cracked tyres

Post by Sanjøy » Mon Oct 29, 2012 4:43 pm

My trailer has old cracked tyres that slowly deflate. Any reason why I should not chuck some old S1 tyre foam in there to slow things down ?

Depends how much you value what's on the trailer I suppose - wouldn't be my choice though :drive

Trailer tyres should not cost much... just get some new ones. Not sure if I'd want to be towing much weight if the tyres are old enough to have perished. I had a tyre blow on a car transporter trailer many years ago - not a pleasant experience!

Good question, mine is the same. (I have been successfully ignoring it for about 6 years though).

My old series Land Rover had cracked tyres and passed at least 2 MOTs without issue ( much to my surprise) and covered a few thousand miles in said state.

I've carried a ton bag of hardcore in my trailer (after over inflating the tyres) and the cracks were so big you could get a coin in them...

Trailer tyres aren't overly pricey but make sure you get the right load rating

When i bought my big trailer one tyre was a car type which i wouldn't even risk at full weight
Landrover 90 = Muddy shed spec
Fiat panda = Couldn't care less spec
Landrover ?? = Muddy shrek spec
Unimog 404S = Very slow silly offroader spec
Kubota F1900 = Snowplough spec

It's a twin axle. Was going to look into some off road wheels for it as I can foresee some field action coming up and could do with a bit more clearance the higher profile tyres offer. Loads generally exceed 1000kg. Saw a couple of trailers for sale that had old Landy steel wheels as tyres.

The gap between the axles isn't going to allow you to go much bigger, the tyres are already very close together.

What stud pattern are the hubs? You could find some old wheels with tyres on from somewhere.

I think it is 4x100 13 inch, need to check the distance between the axles.
