rough idle

Post by BiggestNizzy » Sat Jun 02, 2012 9:25 pm

Not been using the elise much but it was mot'd yesterday so thought I would use it.

I have notice however that it has been hunting on idle, and has cut out once. Other than that it seems to be driving fine.

im guessing if the rev needle is wavering a little - that is the ICS (idling control sensor or system) doing its thing......may need to clean it out or a good hard drive could sort it?

if its idling a little high, this could be the battery is low or one of the terminals is loose, causing the ECU to raise rpm and charge the battery....as i found out, just recently.

Rough love FTW :thumbsup

After much head scratching, and parts changing, mine was down to a leaky inlet manifold gasket.

Or vacuum pipes, these perish after a while. Usually revs higher and can make it a pig to pull away.

Indeed - my lumpy idle was a combination of issues, which made it hard to diagnose. Several things were changed, each improved things slightly, until my friendly mechanic suggested a simple test for the inlet gasket; which after I changed completely solved it.

If you need them I have a few spare sensors and bits that I changed, that you can try if you wish; air flow thing, and engine temp sensor. :thumbsup

yeah inlet manifold leaks can be a pain to identify ....as when the car is cold and idling, the leak is bad, but once you have the car warm the leak can seal its self and every thing seems fine  ...buggers.
