HELP Malfunction lamp illuminated

Post by C7Steve » Sat May 12, 2012 7:39 am

Started my car this morning, and reversed it out of garage, when there was a slight judder, then the car stalled.

Car started first time no problem, and I reversed out of the drive without any noticeable difficulties. I then noticed that the malfunction lamp was illuminated, but not flashing.

Handbook says; "dealer advice should be sought without delay, and all unnecessary journeys avoided."

Car is Elise 111s 52 plate Rover K series.

Any ideas anyone?

Car has just been in for a "C service" in March.

I have just returned from my mates house.

He is a mechanic, and he has a OBD2 code reader.
Codes PO303 and P1301 came up.

Looked up his book that has print off codes for various cars, and it said that it was a misfire on cylinder 3.

He then reset the codes, and the MIL light went off. I took the car for a ten minute drive and the light stayed off.

Came back and plugged in the code reader to check if a misfire was still being registered, but came up clear.

He says that I should take it for a drive over the weekend to see if the problem reappears, because if it does, it might need new spark plugs or leads.

I told him that it's just been in for a "C" service where the spark plugs would have been changed.

I hope that it was a "wee gremlin" and the car will be fine for next weekends Arisaig camping trip.

Thanks to Scottish Elise's, and Robin for your help in previous posts. :thumbsup

Assuming the car is an S2 elise and not S1 VVC then just about every garage should have an OBD2 code reader - pretty much mandatory equipment these days - so pick somewhere local and ask them if they have a code reader and what they'll charge to read out the codes and give you the list (that bit is important - you don't want them to clear the codes and not tell you what they were).

Then post the codes here and somebody will tell you what they mean

Cheers,
Robin
