Folks I see in the past there was talk of different seals for the PG1. On the elisprts site I could only see one type so went with it. This was for the nearside so the larger of the two. Got the old one out and fitted the new one without issues except that they pushed in very very easy. In the past with these type of seals on 4x4's etc Ive needed a socket and mallet to seat them in. With the PG1 I pushed it in with my fingers. Topped up the oil and thought that was it
Now a few weeks later I see a small puddle beneath the car (approx 5cm in diamter) I cannot verify that its from the gear seal and not overspill but doesnt look too promising. When topping up the car was at a fair angle so maybe slightly overfilled but still wound expect it to leak out when not moving.
Does anyone know if there was an uprated seal that gives a tighter fit? Or perhaps there is an underlying problem with the seat?
PS when removing the old seal I could see no tears or deformation as usually expected when replacing these.

It's a long time ago Craig, but I remember fitting one, probably did not do it myself so you could have been helping, but was surprised that it was just a push in fit.

Craig I have always needed to tap them in lightly
did you get genuine mg seals ? you can get them from rover / land rover no problem
I only have one empty bag here and would need to find the other pt number but on this one its TRX100060
they are easy to damage if the shaft does not enter square

Hi mate,
Its usually just push in but like I say they pushed in with my fingers and needed the around the same amount of force as opening a can of coke. I fitted new gear seals to our landcruiser just two weeks ago and these needed punched in with a mallet and suitably sized socket. Its maybe just some over spill, Ive moved the car and cleaned of any excess I could find. Theres cardboaard underneath now so we will see how it turns out.

Thanks Bob, I just bought from Eliseparts so assumed the best avaliable for the application. I spent a lot of time making sure the shaft went in square so pretty sure thats okay. I made that mistake with a honda before
If it turns out to be def the seal Ill try that part number from a landrover dealer.

I get my stuff from elise shop, and they are not that tight to be honest, use a little RTV on the outside, just to be safe.

There are indeed 2 types of seal for the gearbox but the later type B seal fits both. It is the one that has a metal shell to it that encases the rubber. I've had it where they have been a tight fit and a hand push fit so nothing unusual with what your seeing. When they were particularly easy to slide into place I used some instant gasket smeared around the outside to help hold them in place and give them a better chance of sealing. Same stuff that's used on the cranks main seal at the gearbox end. Think I have a couple of seals knocking around if you need them Craig, I also have the rubber drive shaft insertion protector that I have always used since the first time I tried it free hand and the seal leaked for no apparent reason. Very easy to damage the inside of the seal and you can't always see where I discovered.

Cheers mate, the protector is what interests. Does it cover the spline initially then whet removed halfway on?

It fits into the drive shaft hole in the gearbox and once the thin part is in you pull it out then push the shaft all the way home. Really simple rubber deal but it works perfectly.
