VVC head any recommended suppliers?

Post by wul » Wed Jun 15, 2011 7:29 pm

I have flushed the engine and changed the oil but that has not cured the tappity noise from my VVC. If I go for an overhaul of the cylinder head, who is the guy who is best with the VVC mechanicals?

I took the opportunity to stick my head by your engine while you were idling, waiting to go out on track on Saturday. TBH, it was far from the noisiest VVC I've heard... Remember there's not much sound deadening in an S1...

It would be well worth using a long screwdriver (or stethoscope) to listen to each position in turn and see whether the noise is coming from the actual mechanisms or the tappets.

I believe that it's possible to get wear in the eccentric drives on the inlet cams and this can cause noise. In this case you'll either have to live with it or replace the mechanisms I believe.

If the noise is coming from just one specific tappet then it might have a blocked oil way or the tappet itself might not be pumping up properly; in this case you'll be looking at splitting the head, checking the oil ways and perhaps replacing the tappets - they aren't really serviceable, though you can dismantle them.

If the noise is coming from all the tappets I would ignore it.

Either way I think anybody familiar with the VVC will be able to do this work.

Cheers,
Robin

May be worth a call to precision engine services in elgin, young guy richard knows vvc heads
I will be in town today so can ask him if you like, hyd tappetts are cheap for the vvc too but setting up th mechanisms is the tricky bit.

Thanks for the replys. Back home from the heliport. Delayed due to weather offshore. Been sitting in Bristows from 6am until 5pm. I will investigate further with Stethoscope but not tonight.

Steve - Feel free to discuss with Richard. I will take a run up to Elgin next time home. Are you in during the week?

Tut, I will be sure to pass on your comments to Bristows.
Steve, thanks for asking. It looks like we are back to back at the moment. I am not due back onshore until Thursday 30th.
