Ignition

Post by haggis catcher » Tue May 03, 2011 7:02 am

My car has now done this done this to me, and i know it will get worse.

On removal of the key from the ingnition barrel, the engine is still running. If i then select reverse to stall the car, the engine cuts out, but the ingnition lights are still on. If i disconnect the battery, and reconnect it. Then the ingnition lights will be off. Then the car is back to normal for a few days.

Any ideas, or is it a new ignition barrell?

Something is back feeding the ignition. Do you have any extra gadgets fitted to your car?

P.S. If it's an early S1 there was some potential issue with the cigarette lighter, IIRC?

Yep, have you had the ciggy lighter to bits recently?

If so you haev some of the connections screwed up. The ignition circuit stays live via the bulb (!)

The only thing that speaks against a straight wiring fault is that it would have no memory effect, so disconnect/reconnect battery should not make the fault go away. More likely is something plugged into the socket, some sort of ipod nonsense, some kind of tracker, some kind of GPS device, especially anything that might have a hook into the lighting circuits for backlight control, etc.

Cheers,
Robin

Pull all the wiring to the ciggy lighter see if that helps.

I fitted one of these alloy gear gate bling last week, and did remove the lighter. So I will be looking into that today.

Many thanks for your advice. :)

That is such an impressive piece of long distance fault finding.

"My car won't switch off."

"You have taken your cigarette lighter apart recently."
