Rear Tyres before or after Geo and track day?

Post by Ferg » Tue Feb 15, 2011 11:13 pm

Hey Folks,

I'm planning on getting prepped for SIDC track day by getting my Geo sorted. Thing is, my rears (T1Rs) are close to the wear indicator (fronts are new) and as of tomorrow I'll have a new pair waiting to go on. I'm going to have a relatively easy going track day as it'll be hopefully my first outing on a dry track after AMP3 which was rather wet being my first ever outing last year.

So the question is do I change the tyres before the geo so that the geo is right for the jump in tread depth, or do I just get the Geo sorted with the old tyres, use them on the track day and have nice new tyres to fit after wards but the geo is slightly out. I'm worried that with the tread currently very nearly on the wear indicators that I'd be in danger of destroying them on track leaving illegal if not undrivable tyres.

Safe option is to change them and get the geo, but if I'm missing a trick by getting a day out of the old tyres, that wouldn't please my wallet. :thumbsup

All thoughts and opinions welcome.

Ferg (still a track noob)

New or old tyres the 5-6mm increase in ride height will make next to no difference to your geo.

If your tyres are already on the wear indicators i would be tempted to change them as Elises are not that sore on tyres unless you like to drift! Are Wheels Around going to be there? If so you could always have them change them after the track day before heading home :thumbsup

Ps, it will be raining so fit new tyres :damnfunny

(that's why I think Mike will do fine, that and his lack of imagination).

If you went down that line Ferg you would be doing a geo every time your tyres wore down a few mm. Also we often change between R-tyres and road tyres, a 3mm depth difference. Tyre wear makes no noticeable difference to toe or camber.

Ronnie almost always goes to SIDC days unless he has something else big on, so you could use up your tyres on track and order new ones so that you are legal on the way home.

I agree with Tut.

I don't know driving in another way which isn't risky. Each one has to improve himself. Each driver has its limit. My limit is a little bit further than other's.

Sounds like a plan, I'll phone wheelaround and see if he's going to be there. :thumbsup
