fourth gear popping out at speed!

Post by dirkpitt » Tue Nov 09, 2010 5:36 pm

Hi fellow SE’ers,

I have a query that I would like to see if anyone has any ideas the problem and solutions too.

I was on a SE run a while ago down the borders. While enjoying the great roads I had an issue. For some reason, while in fourth gear and at around 5000 rpm and holding the gear popped out. This happened twice on the day.

After doing some looking online, I came across a few reasons why this maybe. If the road is bumpy …the engine can move on the mounts and cause the gear shifter to move. Another was that you need to adjust the cables a wee bit…also, check gearbox oil level and refresh gear oil. Some have been extreme and suggested it is an internal problem and a gearbox rebuild was needed.

I tend to remember the road was bumpy, so I am thinking it was the engine mounts moving that has caused the problem, but my fellow SE’ers who where following me didn’t suffer my fate!

Has anyone on here had the same problem? And did you manage to solve it?

:cheers

Hi Leigh
Whilst you are waiting for some of the Yota boys to answer, I would pop over to Exiges.Com and ask the same question

There is much written about the Celica gearbox problems on the web......mainly around 3rd and 4th gear......prompting a lot of people to either upgrade gearsets or change gearboxes.
(Scotty has killed at least 4 gearboxes to my knowledge)

:cheers

update.

i have done a gearbox oil change with some casrtol taff-x and so far so good...although, to add the yota 6 speed synchromesh gearbox does have its little probs.......shifting from 2nd to 3rd when cold will catch. pushing into first and maybe 2nd when still moving can be difficult; especially 1st gear. now these are observations i have noticed , but to me they are not problems........the 1st gears issue IMHO is to stop you from selecting it at speed, so for protection.....good! the shifting up to 3rd and catching, IMHO is synchromesh not quite getting it right. i find if i double de clutch or blip the throttle its gone. now these are road observation not track where usage of the gearbox is in anger.

saying all this i let one of my best mates have a go in the exige a while ago and he’s a bit of a race driver, and he loved the gearbox...said it was one of the best he’s used!!he, just kept shifting effortlessly up and down at will, like playing a piano :D …..

loads of them catch every so slightly going into 3rd sometimes.. and getting into 1st while still moving is almost impossible - very well documented and nothing to worry about.
