Grooved or Plain?

Post by 2F45T4U » Fri Oct 29, 2010 10:23 am

Just bought a full set of mintex 1144 pads and found my front discs are shot on the inside face. The discs fitted look like EBC grooved items. Im aware of the theoretical advantages of grooved, but is there actually any noticable difference on a 'fast-road' car?

Given that they'll probably by fooked by the end of winter anyway im tempted just to go for plain discs at £27 a corner.

any thoughts?

Good point.

I have never run plain discs apart from my MMC's, certainly avoid drilled ones which are liable to cracking on the more powerful models.

From a practical point of view, grooved and drilled discs are prone to rust build up. If your not hammering the car on track on a regular basis and judging by your pad choice it will be normal road use I would stick to plain discs. I had to clean the rust out of Morvens discs because she was getting a rumbling and that's what we traced it to.
Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....

Hi

I put the EBC discs and pads on your car prior to you purchasing it..........so they have lasted a few years!

Buy from EBC direct online.........punch in the voucher code scooby58 (expired but still works) for an extra 15% discount

:cheers

I was really happy with my EBC grooved discs first time round, and then bought "turbogrooves" (grooves and dimples as well, woo) 2nd time round cos regular grooves weren't available.

Whilst Sanjoy kindly cleaned out some crud for me recently :thumbsup I've never found them anything but great for road and track. Mated to Pagid RS4-2s or Mintex 1144s and braided lines, they're decent value IMHO.

I certainly have no reason to choose a std plain disk any more.

for road use, plain are fine, and as said , dont have the problem of rust as much.I can get mintex at about £45 a pair, or Apec for a wee bit more. Ali is fitting a set of Apec with my groove pattern to my car next week for the Spa trip, so we will see how good they are.

Thanks for the feedback.

just fitted EBC turbo grooved discs. really happy with the new pads and changing out all the brake fluid has given me a nice pedal again.

Just a heads up for Yvo, owner of http://www.eliseshop.com, for great service today when the Internet was down, and also for his prices. Trying Carbone Lorraine RC6's for the first time, as all reports put them ahead of Pagid 14's, and they are cheaper at £79. Also renewing the front EBC UMX disks, and will bring along spares and Pagid 14's for the rear in case the MMC's are not upto Spa.

Calling into Ronnie's on the way down to Robin's on Wednesday to get 48R's all round fitted, so together with picking the car up after an oil & filter service, brake fluid change, and overall check up, hoping that I have done everything I can to see it through the Spa weekend.

Just a pity that I cannot get a billion mile service for myself.
