W210 E320 CDI EGR Valve cleaning

Post by Sanjøy » Fri Oct 08, 2010 12:23 am

Sooooooooooo the long and the short of it the merc was going in to limp mode. 2k max which is off boost and in an big ol barge that is damn slow.

Took it to the garage and they said it was the MAF and that would be really expensive so they cleaned the existing one and it was fine for about 20 mins then was back to the same. Frank chat with the mech and he reckons I should get rid of it.

That will not do, the ol beast has only done a paltry 147k and it is my armchair.

Down to MB and buy a new MAF for £50. Fit it and things get better, boosting along nicely again but the boost comes and goes and after a day or so we are in limp again in less than 5 mins from start.

LOTS of reading on the MBworld wedbsite and another MB one and found out about a exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). I also found out how gummed up the valve gets and the mischief it causes.

So with Robins Torx bits in hand I set about it. Horrid task to get it off without taking the whole manifold off. In hindsight I would have taken the lot off.

Get the thing out and the outlet of the EGR in to the plenum is uber gummed. Thick harded sludge is all I could describe it as. The inlet plenum to the EGR was coked with hard soot as was the actual valve.
30 mins later of cleaning all this crud out with an old tent peg and other makeshift tools I was happy it was as clean as it would get.
Put a finger in to the plenum chamber and it had 5mm thick coating of the hardened sludge. A job for another day and 5l of degreaser, I am after a fix not more power right now.

Then was the fun job of putting it all back together.

Several peeps on the board suggest I buy a merc of this era as they are over engineered. Yes, yes they are.

Well it all went back, lots of swearing, lots of pacing about and wondering what I would do if I could not get it back together.

V nervous midnight test drive, not the best idea as S was in bed and no chance of a lift if I broke down.

Waited for it to warm up, waited for about 10 mins by which point previously it would be in limp and nailed. Boost glorious boost. By Jove I think he has fixed it !

Moral of the story, if you oilburner is smoking like a git or not boosting when expected get a new MAF and then clean your EGR.

Same thing happened to a mates Fiat Marea last year, garage wanted to replace the turbo amongst other things, when infact the EGR was just full of soot.

Too many 'puters to permit a block on this model. IT is what I had hoped to do.

I Junked the EGR on the 300ZX. being a 'V' the exhaust gas from the turbo of one bank was split to feed both the plenums. I found the valve jammed open and the tubes blocked on one side so at idle, the 2 banks were un balanced and rough as hell.

junked the lot, welded over the tapping on the exhaust manifold, the flanges on the plenum and plugged the vacuum line from the SOV to the actuator. its ran so much better ever since, and i also stopped getting the sludge appearing across the throttle bodies.

I know exactly the grey crud you're on about.

Well done.

Anything of that nature I attempt tends to result in a pleading call to Nizzy (and the services of his employers tooling to fabricate a new 'whatever bit I've fubbed up").

I cleaned mine Sanjoy and Im afraid it didnt last! Had to purchase a new unit eventually and its wasnt cheap. Also worth noting that running with it failed can lead to broken butterflys in the inlet tract which meant I had to purchase an entire new inlet manilfold at a later date!!

Good write up Sanjoy
according to a Peugeot site over 80% of exhaust gasses go through the one on the 206 1.4 at idle so easy to see how they get gummed up

A mere pup being a 2000 year car, our little Fabia VRS has just returned form its 140k service (now 15 Skoda stamps  ) and its a 06 plate

I recently changed the EGR valve also and was tempted to do away with it but the way i seen it was that it had been fine for the last 130k so why should a new one not last another 130k :thumbsup

(that's why I think Mike will do fine, that and his lack of imagination).
