Holy Exhaust

Post by kerryxeg » Tue Jun 22, 2010 12:46 pm

More of an update than anything else.

I went to investigate the noisy exhaust last night. The weld between the flexipipe and it's flange to the CAT had failed - complete break with a nice 1" gap. It's a clean enough break and has gone to a mate to reweld. Now that I think about it, it could have been cracked for some time (there has been some evidence of black liquid running over that section). It may have seen some stress when the silencer weld failed last year. This must be an exhaust for life, this is the 4th and final weld on the system to get redone.

Being so close to the Lambda sensor must have resulted in the readings getting some fresh air dilution and hence more fuel being added. So on the upside the new ECU is probably fine once I get the leaks sorted (the engine was dropping to 500rpm when I lifted off and stalling at junctions).

I only hope Brian has recovered from the effects of the fumes.

It certainly must have been. If I hadn't stopped and looked, the tip would have been happily melting the clam!

Might be worth having a look at your engine mounts and making sure they aren't a bit worn out. Thats what broke the my flexi when I first got my elise.

Thanks a good suggestion, but they have all just been replaced. The joints may well have been weakened before though, either due to the previous worn mounts or the other weld failure at the silencer. Hopefully I'll have a nicely welded repair waiting for me to fit when I get home tonight.
