Cooling fan on cold start

Post by Giraffe696 » Fri May 07, 2010 8:07 pm

Hi folks,

Got my 2nd Elise just the other week and it hasn't been long before I've been reminded how they require that wee bit more attention than your average vehicle.

First of all car is a S2 111R and the problem is on a completely cold start the cooling fan is coming on and staying on. I've found that it is having no adverse effect on the running temps and apart from the fan the car is running well. If I then stop the car, cut the engine and leave it for 5 mins then restart the cooling fan stays off. I haven't ran it hard enough/long enough to see if the fan cuts in when it should i.e 110 etc but I would like to think it will.

Reading some of the posts temp sender units seem to get mentioned, hope these symptoms are common and it's an easy fix?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :cheers

Anyhoo, glad to be back in a Lotus and looking forward to getting more involved in the Lotus scene this time round.

Yup - classic fail state for the temp sensor. Fan runs as a failsafe. Few quid for the part, depends how much spannering you prefer to do, but it's an hours work tops.

Thanks Shug, not too great with a spanner but I will order up the part and take it from there.

just make sure you order it for the right engine - your's is a toyota engine, not the common rover engine as fitted to most earlier elises.
