Gaz Shockers

Post by type36 » Wed Apr 28, 2010 9:08 pm

Hi, I am going to ask a stupid question..... What way up do Gaz shockers go? The originals the body of the shock goes to the top. I would suspect that these Gaz shockers the body goes to the bottom. Am I right?

Yes you are. They are twin tube so should not be mounted inverted.

Personally, I'd just box them up and send them back though as they're pretty useless IMHO.

If the Gaz shockers are useless what would you suggest I buy then?

gaz dont have a great reputation on elise forums, nitrons are the dogs bollocks. Wether 99% of elise drivers would notice the difference is debatable.

I do generally agree that you get what you pay for, but its the law of diminishing returns.

Martin Donelly has won races with gaz shocks. Fact is, donelly could probably win with spagetti suspending his car (unless i was racing him ) but it cant be that sh*t.

I had GAZ shocks on my S1 (to replace original Konis) and found the fast road handling to be better than the billys that replaced them - took ages to get the damper settings right though. The only complaint I had with them that they were too hard for daily use and softening them made for comedy handling thats the only reason I got rid of them.

I had them on for over a year and had no mechanical issues with them either. :thumbsup

Ok, I'll clarify a bit.

Some of them seem to be fine but their quality control seems to be non-existant. I have seen dampers that are supposed to be the same where the valving in them is completely different, to the extent that you can feel it by hand. I guess they don't bother putting them on a damper dyno at all. I have also seen the same inconsistecy with their springs.

So really, it's pot luck whether you get a set of dampers that actually work or not. Personally I wouldn't want to spend 600 quid to take that kinda chance.

So there you go, perhaps the people who told you they're a decent damper can give you their direct experience of them now. ;)

With regards to what I would recommend, that would depend entirely on your use of the car and what tyres you run.

dan, i've written 3 replies to your post, but none of them sound like i want them too. So i'll not bother arguing. Suffice to say, if the OP had started a thread asking what dampers to buy, i wouldnt have recomended gaz.

Fair enough Neil. Perhaps I could have phrased my initial post better. I just wrote it in a hurry.

Off to buy some Tampax now. ;)

I considered buy some Gaz shocks, if I remember Brunty was selling them, but after reading various reports (mostly on SELOC) I decided against them and got Bilstiens again.

He didn't ask what do you think of Gaz Shocks  a simple question regarding fitting.
