S1/340r Cat in Abz area - MOT time
S1/340r Cat in Abz area - MOT time
340r is overdue it's MOT.
I've replaced the headlights (both smashed after last SE run), sidelight and some other bits and bods. I've got an S2 cat and a 2bular cat which are wrong shape and too short.
Anyone in the Aberdeen area have one lying around I could borrow to get it thru the MOT. The decat pipe is 360mm face to face.
Cheers
Brian

Hi Brian,
Colin has brand new Cat in his garage, 99% sure its just a standard S1 CAT.
I will pm you his number or could drop if off as I want a peek at your honda conversion.
Cheers

I haven't heard back from Alan yet so that would be great.
I tried your mobile but you must be out enjoying the car and the weather
My wife's up past Mintlaw tomorrow and could pick it up from the caravan office on her way back if that suits.

I'm happy to let you have a close look at the Honda installation, we'll just need to organise a time that suits.

Re: S1/340r Cat in Abz area - MOT time
Brian, if your's is a Link-Up conversion then the cat/cat pipe is a bespoke item.
I have one here but that's not much use to you, although I doubt you'll find one closer. Probably easier to find a flexible MOT place. Scotty knows someone up that way.

Just saw this Brian, wont be home till later (around 4.30) but from Dans post it wont be any use to you. Let me know if you still wanna collect and Ill get it round to the office. Alternatively leave a bottle of whisky in the PAX seat when you drop it off for the test, works for me.

Sorry Brian, too busy enjoying the sunshine yesterday, Colin brought his CAT round anyway.
If it's a bespoke item, maybe try Jim@2bular. He has always helped me out anyway. All of the MOT Testers I know in Aberdeen are Nazi's, so can't help you either.
All the best

Re: S1/340r Cat in Abz area - MOT time
Typical Lotus, nothing is straightforward.
The cat I have is 300mm face to face, 60mm shorter than the decat pipe, so I'll use it and work around how to support the silencer (offset by 60mm) and rear panel. I should be able to extend the mounting rods on the silencer with some alloy tubing but will need an alternative support bracket for the nearside panel support as it will foul the exhaust. It only needs to drive a mile to the MOT station so just need to take it easy on the way there!
Thanks for the advice and offers of cats guys even 'though they're not much use. I'll let you know how I get on with the mods.
Cheers,
Brian

Re: S1/340r Cat in Abz area - MOT time
Hope you get this sorted. Mine was in for its MOT the other day and I drove it in the garage and it was sitting idling for about 5-10mins and the guy poped the probe in to start the emmisions test and he looked shocked at the figures it was miles out and asked if there was a cat fitted (there is). I then suggested taking it for a quick blat to see if it would help as the car had been sitting in the garage for past few weeks and not drove hard and I didnt think it sitting idling would have helped and he agreed. 5 mins round the industrial estate and a few quick blats and I returned. He poped in the probe again and it passed no problem therefore I would suggest the cat must be needed and also give it a wee blat to clear any crap out before it goes in!

Yup - standard practise is to give the car a shoeing on the way to the MOT centre as they are borderline on emissions and the cats need to be nice and hot...

Re: S1/340r Cat in Abz area - MOT time
340r was in for its MOT yesterday and failed on emissions, a cracked windscreen and a slightly high headlight.
Headlight is an easy fix, windscreen slighlty more complicated but the biggest headache are the emissions.
Emissions readings were:-
Fast Idle
CO 2.81% Fail
HC 181ppm Pass
Lambda 1.02 Pass
Second Fast Idle
CO 4.04% Fail
HC 285 ppm Fail
Lambda 0.95 Pass
Natural Idle
CO 3.90% Fail
The figures suggest the car is running rich which could be down to it still being cold on the test, although the engine oil temp reading was 127 degC, or the lambda sensor is faulty.
The car was reasonably hot when dropped off but it sat for about an hour before the test was carried out.
Would a really hot engine result in a pass or is there an issue with the lambda sensor?
Any of the technical gurus suggest the next step?
Cheers

Re: S1/340r Cat in Abz area - MOT time
As said above, first thing to check is that your Cat is upto working temperature ( above 450 degrees, i believe.) A good roasting before emission checks will usually do the trick.
Do you have a K100 or Kpro ECU ? and is your engine a JDM ?
If it still fails you need to check that your ECU is reading the 02 sensor. It should be reading around the .65 v, if its not you need to check the 02 sensor manually.
I have all the software in the house ( with spare sensors), if you want a hand I can pop round.

Brian, if you are looking for a windscreen quickly you can have my spare and replace it when you get a chance>

Re: S1/340r Cat in Abz area - MOT time
its hard to say conclusivly from those results. to me, it would suggest the Lambda sensor is functioning as the closed loop control is managing within the limits of the test, however, this may just be a coincidence.
theres a lot of HCs and the CO being high suggest poor combustion, or a missfire. however the lambda would show very lean if it was a miss as the O2 concentrations would be very high.
one of the things to check if you havent already done so is the air filter, if its choked the quality of combustion will be crap.
other than the things youve suggested it could be a water temp sender, a sticky or dirty injector giving a poor atomising spray. but its difficult to say without further testing.
if it would help, i can post the results of my passed test i did on wednesday. My failed results are on my thread in the technical section. mine is just a bog std K-series.
