Hit a pothole now leaking coolant

Post by vet111s » Sun Apr 11, 2010 8:11 pm

As the subject says, hit a pothole or sunken manhole cover today in glasgow. Parked the car and came back to find liquid under my car. Didn't think too muc of it until I parked at home and now got another pool under the back of my car. Initially thought oil but oil level ok and on closer inspection seems to be pink coolant. Was planning a trip to MMC for my service this week but looks like some more work needing done now! Planning on a claim to the council.
Any thoughts on what's burst? Havn't taken my undertray off yet

Thanks in advance

Ali

If it's at the back it sounds like it's pipe related - if it had burst your rad the pool would be at the front.

Check everything is connected properly and all the pipes are tight to the tank.

I also hit a pothole today and have developed a bad squeek

Realistically if its coolant, then its only likely to come from the weak points in the system.
have you checked all of the hoses are fully in place? one may have loosened if you are lucky
start at header tank and work your way round.

is the leak coming from front or rear? could be a split plastic end cap on the radiator if its the front

What he said, start checking hoses and the rad.

Get someone else to call the pothole first ... :thumbsup

Well the AA reckons the leak is from the water pump (nuts!) and shortly my little car will be on a trailer en route to MMC. Have got pictures of the offending hole cause I'm still sure that's what did it as there was no leak until I hit it. It's been filled before so I doubt they can argue they didn't know it was there.
I'll keep you posted
