S2 'K' Wheel Bearing

Post by Kev » Tue Mar 23, 2010 4:48 pm

I'm in the process of changing my front right wheel bearing and while following the service manual it's says remove the M16 clamping bolt and stepped washers, well I haven't got them fitted, just 3 bolts attaching the hub bearing assy to the hub carrier. Was the clamping bolt and washers a modification added later on?

S2 wheel bearing totally different to S1; the S2 wheel bearing comes as a bearing pack, secured to the hub with three torx-head bolts. Remove the three bolts, throw away old bearing, offer up new bearing pack, bolt it back on (but use new bolts IIRC).

Cheers,
Robin

P.S. The S2 bearing does not require a clamp bolt, so you'll see a hole at the fronts where the axle would go. But I guess some early S2's may have had the clamp bolt fitted, but it is absolutely not required. Unless some really really early S2s had the S1- style bearing & upright, but I really doubt that!

I don't think you have to replace the bolts, although I had to cut at least one of pete's off when we did his rear.

Bearing packs are a brilliant idea, if anyone in ayrshire has an old one so I can draw the thing up (I am not going to travel half way across the country for a knackered bearing) After doing pete's [hub] I liked the idea of making a new hub for the S1

Cheers Robin :thumbsup

I did think the clamping bolt doesn't seem to do much, but thought, since it was in the book I'd better check.
