MOT failure

Post by tut » Thu Mar 04, 2010 5:54 pm

Went to tax N3 on line only to find that the MOT had expired the previous day. Put it into John and it will require some new parts, tyres no problem will get 48R's from Camskill, track rod ends probably Elise-Parts, wheel bearing from Dingbros, but the rear toe link ends need replacing, these are Geary's uprated ones, but can not find any end bushes listed anywhere.

Anybody else had to replace them?

Geary will sell you them if you phone him - not the cheapest I'd guess, but I couldn't be arsed measuring them up last time. If Ricky wants to take measurements, they are pretty standard rose joints and you'll get them from any motorsports parts place.

Thanks Shug, will check whether they are inboard, outboard, or both.

Just check which way the thread goes - there's LH and RH threaded ones - either of which could be inboard or outboard dependant on how it was fitted - they are identical otherwise.

Don't be too hard on yourself last time I tried to tax a car on line with a short MOT it wouldnt let me as there were less than 6 weeks remaining on the MOT Certificate not sure if that has changed now that every MOT centers gone digital

I don't have to actually pay car tax, and fortunately there is nothing on at the moment until SIDC, so at least I have time to get everything sorted.

I was wondering if it was more of an installation issue.

No, I think it's the way the car is used ;-)

The bolt that snapped after Anglesey was from the first uprated kit that was installed up the mountain when the OE part broke. That was probably down to installation - we didn't have a torque wrench to hand on Ventoux, and the adrenaline was flowing, so probably 2x overtorqued - also we had some spare spacing shims that I didn't want to lose so they were placed between the lock nut and the casting - apparently this isn't a good idea, though I don't understand the material science well enough to know why.

However, the wear in the bearing (i.e. non-catastrophic failure) appears to be influenced by how long the car spends traveling sideways rather than just mileage ...

Cheers,
Robin

Yeah, that'll do it Robin. If you drive like that things will always break/wear out faster.

Good link Hamish, just been on the phone to them and they will do the Uniball end bearings, identical to Eliseparts, for £24 as opposed to £34.

Would have saved me £40.
