Hey guys. Im keeping my fingers crossed that my ECU hasnt given up the ghost but I am getting a very poor tick over and have been through all of my fuses. Replaced the crankshaft sensor (£100) after getting an error reading but problem remains. Does anyone know of an ECU out there I could have a loan of in order to check whether I need a complete replacement. Part number B117M0039F. If the ECU was spare I may well be in the market for buying it from you but happy to borrow just to check on mine.
Much appreciated in anticipation of help.

Re: 2001 ECU
Have you checked the live data readings while it's idling (especially while it's idling badly)? That would seem more productive than swapping parts about. Ali has a OBDII reader as do most garages - the point is not to look for a stored failure code but to look for an incongruous sensor reading. If you cannot find one then I would start looking at mechanical things like leaks from the manifolds and perhaps stuff like spark plugs, coils, leads.

Re: 2001 ECU
Hi Robin, Suggestions much appreciated. Im not getting any warning lights on the dash and no faults on the reader. so thought it may well be the ECU. At least I was wanting to discount it before looking for loose wires etc. I am remembering with fondness my first car, a Triumph Spitfire. Tighten it, loosening or hit it and it probably worked again. Ahh bliss.
thanks again

Re: 2001 ECU
Yes, you're not looking for faults on the reader, you're looking for unusual sensor values (e.g. engine temperature warm when in fact it's cold, etc.). The sensor values are shown on the live data page of the reader - the cheap readers off ebay only show stored trouble codes and offer to reset MIL - they don't have live data page - so you need to use a proper one.

Gavin,
Have you had a look at the plug end on the coil pacls (you need to pull the rubber boot off) as I've had a similar problem and it was down to these being fouled.
