FFS.. yet again this shed has let me down...

Post by Victor Meldrew » Tue Jan 19, 2010 10:35 pm

Flooded the engine trying to start it...

The battery was getting close to flat, it did turn for a bit but didn't fire...

Battery pack for jump starting was also pretty much flat... turned for a bit more but didn't fire...

Hooked up the Audi with the jump leads, turned for ages but didn't fire...

Out with the plugs, soaking....

Checked for a spark.. got a small spark, orange... changed the plug gap, checked again, white spark..

Still didn't fire...

New plugs bought as contingency... bores left open for a few hours then dried out with a heat gun for ages..

New plugs fitted.. nothing...

off with the dizzy cap, good looks reasonable.

It ran yesterday evening.. touched nothing electrical today.. possibly bumped a wire when I had the air box off but everything looks good.
Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....

If it helps John, I spent 45 minutes trying to start my Freelander last night. Gave up and left it till lunchtime today, jumped in and it fired up straight away. Been running fine since! Bloody K-series!

If you can get the MEMS reattached it might well have better cold starting capability than the Emerald.

Not sure that will work Robin, what with 285 cams, throttle bodies and no map sensor, I think the MEMS may struggle.

I think Robin means just to let the engine fire and perhaps get some heat in it - I agree it's pretty unlikely it'll idle, let alone be drivable. Then plug the Emerald back in when there's a wee bit o heat in the engine - I know first hand what a pain in the hole mapping the cold starts is. I know of a couple of occasions where the MEMS start has worked - and I have heard of it briefly running a 285 cammed TB engined number.

Luck I suppose, but it might be just enough to revive the engine and run it - sounds like the cold start on the Emerald has too much enrichment by far...

Its maybe worth towing to build up compression ?

Ive had a couple of K series that wouldn't start after sitting for a couple of months, I towed them in gear to build up compression then turn the ignition on to start the Engine. Once its started there fine.

Just a suggestion

Trying to tune the old Porker's Megasquirt for cold start was a royal pain - you only get one go really as it's not properly cold after that.
Took ages and stil wasn't very accurate - just about worked though even in stupidly cold temps - more luck than judgement though!
Didn't help the coolant temp sender refused to stay in calibration fopr more than 20 mins...

AA diagnosed it as a coil issue.

Injectors are firing.. checked with a little plug in light thing..

12v supply to coil ok
switching supply to coil ok

No spark from the coil.

it was sparking yesterday, but not very strong.. will wait and see if it runs with a new coil.. diagnosis makes sense.

Vic, take a look at the rotor arm. I had the same thing happen to mine, same diagnosis but it wasn't the coil it was earthing through a short in the rotor arm. You can see the short, shows up as a faint line in the plastic. Mine was inside the spindle hole. Worth a check, cheaper than a coil. I've got a spare one if you need it, coil that is.

The MEMS would actually run N1 at 190hp, I had to try it once, but you would not want to drive very far.
