VX 220 chassis

Post by ABZ-Elise » Thu Dec 17, 2009 8:43 am

Can a vx220 chassis be used as a replacement chassis for an S1 Elise? Are all the engine mount positions in the same place as an S1 Elise?

I know a vx220 uses an elise chassis but I'm not sure if it was an S1 or S2 chassis or if they made any changes to mount the vauxhall engine.

It must be the S2 chassis, I think.

The engine mounts may or may not be the same as the S2, though, as it's conceivable that they drill different holes in the chassis to mount the adapters/mounts. That said, you could probably drill your own holes if you had an accurate way of working out where they belong.

Cheers,
Robin

P.S. Not that this helps you if you're trying to rebuild an S1 using a vx220 chassis.

Think you will find it is slighly longer, someone on vx220.org converted a 220 tubro to an exige boby but it took lots of bodging. I would have thought it was more like the S1 as it was code named type 116.

I'm pretty sure its a longer version of the S2 as the suspension is interchangable.

How do you define chassis though? Ally tub, or ally tub + subframe. Subframe's definitely different (hence longer overall), tub has low sides, so more like S2 than S1.

Doesn't the VX fit in between the S1 and S2 meaning it's most probably loosely based on the S1 developed a bit probably in the direction of the S2 (with the S2 being further developed again... ?)

I'd reckon you'd be in a whole world of pain trying to do the conversion and since the VX is a much rarer car surely there is more of an abundance of S1 parts around?!

The VX220 is based on the S2 not the S1 so no the chassis wont be of any use to you

As GM paid for the S2 I would have thought the VX chassis is almost identical to the S2 it hay have the odd little bit different here and there the extrusion tooling is relativly cheap so I can imagine bits from both S1/S2/VX got mashed together a bit.

would I use a VX chassis to build an S1 or even an S2 no, it could be a spectacular pain in the ass.

although saying all that doesn't the 1-11 use a S1 chassis with a S2 subframe ?
