Re: Ride Height Changes

I had the shock in a vice, with a little heat on the spring platform and put as much effort into them as I thought was safe. Not even a little movement. The threads weren't really dirty but I still cleaned them up well and heavy application of penetrating fluid. I just can't imaging why they have seized so badly.

So I had to put it back on the car. At least it was the first one I took off rather than the last as that would have been so much more frustrating.

As far as damping settigns go the car was all over the place. The front were set at 3&6 clicks from full hard and the rears 4 & 5. A bit weird. I have now set them to 8 at the front and 6 at the back and the difference is already fantastic. the cars not so rigid and is handling the roads so much more easily. I didn't go the full recomended settings as I'm worried with the car beign so low it might increase the problems I'm having with rubbing.

I still want to raise the car up a little but this improvement has made a great difference to how the car is to live with..

SO anyone know what to do now with the shock? Is it a refurb job?

After speaking with Nitron and also via a thread I have on SELOC, it appears the previous owner was a little economical with the truth about how old the shocks were and marks my first downer after buying the car. The shocks are about 8 years old and if I've loosened the top cap then they need to go for a refurb.

This looks to be around £65+vat per shock. It seems worth while as they should come back as new. The turn around time is about a week.

I was wondering if anyone might have an old set of front shocks kicking about so I could go through the repair process without taking the car off the road.
Even better a full set so I can just get the lot done. £250-300 for a completely refurbed set of shocks does seem better than the £900+ price new.

Any ideas?

Whereabouts you based?

I should be able to dig out my old Ledas (one is leaking) which are gash, but would keep the corners of the chassis off the road. Added benefit is that the ride height wouldn't be as much of a major change as whacking Konis on it for the period (and you'd really appreciate how good Nitrons are after getting the sh*t kicked out of you by the Ledas for a week!)

Not got any cross-country jaunts planned, so if you're Edin, it might be worth seeing if there's something more local - bound to be.

Thats mighty kind of you. Like you say I just need to keep the four corners off the deck for a week while the nitrons get repaired.

I'm actually coming past Ayr on my way to/from Stranraer this weekend to visit my newly born Niece. Ayr is enroute so if you did have the shocks available, and theres no one east coast with a similar offer, and you were ameniable to being about sometime on Sunday, then I'd be partial to taking you up on your offer.

I'll PM you... :)

You and I must be the only ones left that still have Ledas. I actually have two sets, though one is still in France even though he never paid them me for them. (Waterloo, Agincourt).

The other set looking very sorry for themselves, still with the protective rubber condoms on, are in the garage.

I'm saying I have them, but it's not unlikely that they've turned into solid lumps of rust in the shed. They weren't far off that when I took them off the car!

Perhaps I can fleabay them as collectors items...
