look at my rusty hole!

Post by r055 » Tue Oct 06, 2009 9:14 pm

Sorry Shug... its lotus content!
Went to fill up the lotus last week and noticed that there is alot of corrosion around the fuel filler inlet....

If anyone was paying attention earlier this year, I got a new tank, pump and filler hose fitted as they were all heavily corroded and fuel pump strainer was clogged up causing the car to cut out.

before I had the filler nozzle replaced, there were no external signs of the rust happening, but now its clearer. The cap is letting in moisture/ water penetration which is forming a coating of rust then flowing down the pipe into the tank.
Got a new cap from EP today.

Other than taking tank out again, are there any additives I can fire into the tank to clear this up? :?:

Urine is a very good scarifier, so you could try peeing into it.

ps play safe and compare circumferences first.

Interesting, I had this happen on an old Mk2 Scirocco I owned. Without being able to fully drain the tank, we (my dad and I) managed to rig up a magnet attached to a rod of metal (all tightly tied together with a piece of string to make sure it didn't fall off!) and pushed that into the tank, obviously rust being ferrous it managed to pick up a lot of the rust flakes that had been bunging up the fuel strainer. Not sure how easy/practical this might be on an S1 Elise (suspect a Scirocco's fuel tank is slightly easier to get at than an Elise's!). Good luck :thumbsup

Also Ross, if you do fit a new one, give it a liberal application of Vaseline or spray on grease and it will prevent problems in the future.
