Engine won't stop

Post by Stephen » Sat Oct 03, 2009 8:49 pm

For some reason my engine is not stopping when I take out the key?
It stops eventually but seems to use up the fuel in the pipes first. Any Ideas?

Thanks & sorry for not bing on for a while.

i have some very vague memory of this being something to do with the power to the cigarette lighter. have you been fiddling with that recently?? IIRC its when you reconnect it with the wires the wrong way round, but this might be total and utter crap

When i first got my exige when i had my lights on i could take the keys out and it would not stop but when i turned the lights off it would. That turned out to be the wires round the wrong way in the cigarette lighter.

Most likely the MFRU.

Is the rev counter showing engine speed or zero while it's running on?

If you open the throttle a little bit while it's in this state, what happens - does the engine rev up or stall immediately?

If this all only happens when the lights are on, then it's the cigarette lighter wiring, most probably.

Robin

Hi Dan,

Out of interest, what's the MFRU failure mode that causes this condition? Is it that the main relay doesn't release but the fuel pump relay does? Even so I would expect the ECU to stop spark/fuel once the ignition sense wire goes inactive - perhaps not though - who knows!

Cheers,
Robin

Seen it quite a few times Robin.

The Main Relay not releasing will cause the engine to run on until it runs out of fuel in the rail. Usually caused by water/corrosion inside the MFRU.

If the cigarette lighter terminals have not been reversed, why would that be a possible cause?

It seems to have sorted itself so will look out for the suggested symptoms should it happen again.
