Fitted a decat pipe the other weekend and ever since the car has been a bit smelly with exhaust fumes. Is this normal?

you've either not sealed the joints properly! which lets face it is unlikely

or

it's the film coating on the new exhaust burning off under the heat?

if the exhaust is blowing then the problem is the first one! if it's not blowing then most likely just the coating burning off! takes a week or so for this to go away from experience (not with a lotus tho - mini, rover 820si, civic etc)

I noticed mine is sometimes fumey, and I have read that is normal practice after a decat so I have never worried.

You should smell the stench of mine!

Aye, they run a bit rich anyway, taking out the cat means you smell it more. :)

Yip mine's pussy less and it's rank rotten, when you think about it the CAT would have prevented these fumes escaping previously, not to worry mate enjoy the extra noise

Especially when you reverse. Fills the car with fumes as you drive back thru the reek
