On the clio it is more likely to be the earth strap between the gearbox and front chassis leg. Common problem on them.BiggestNizzy wrote:Interesting to know what this one is as it's the same with my clioit just clicks but never starts I am going to replace the starter motor, and the battery as well.

OKay the earth strap has seen better days and will be replaced at some point but that isn't the problem I used a jump lead in it's place and it is still giving me trouble, I have noticed that I get a flickering oil pressure and battery light when I am attempting to crank or it is just sitting on II.
When I turn the ignition to III it draws no power as my lights don't dim and the battery appears to be chucking out 16v
is there anyway I can test the starter before I purchase a new one ?

Re: Clio starter motor troubles ?
Niz,
You would need a wiring diagram for the clio to work out what's going on - if there is one I can view online I would be happy to make some guesses.
It would make sense to check the +12v lines on the back of the starter - one should be at +12 all the time; the other should be at +12 while the key switch is in position III, assuming that's crank.
There is then one further lead (smaller gauge wire than the other two) which should also go to +12 while the key switch is in III.
If the smaller gauge lead doesn't go to +12 during cranking, pull the lead off and take a short length of reasonable gauge wire (a bit of 3A mains cable will be fine for a test). Hold one end of the wire to the permanent +12 on the back of the starter - check the car is in neutral, then touch the other end of the wire to the terminal that the smaller gauge wire came off. You should get a fair old clunk as the solenoid shuffles across and then the starter should turn (you can do this with ignition off, so the engine won't start, or with the switch in II in which case the engine might start).
Let us know what you find.
Cheers,
Robin

Re: Clio starter motor troubles ?
Got rid of the the Pug a few month back, and got a '54 Clio for Linda.
Had a lot of problems with it starting, and turned out to be an injector sucking in air. While investigating a solution I found:-
a) It could be the key/immobiliser, try starting the car with the spare.
b) TDC sensor, try taking the TDC (Top Dead Center) out and give it a clean (never did find it though, even with a Haynes manual)
c) Clean ECU terminals
d) Take out, clean and replace all solinoids and fuses that are under the cover behind the battery
e) Check Earth to same.
Blaque.

Car starts in a little miss sunshine way, but I will try that tonight (loathed to buy another as I am on my 6th at £100 a time !Blaque wrote:a) It could be the key/immobiliser, try starting the car with the spare.
Common problem it's in the middle between the gearbox and engine.Blaque wrote:b) TDC sensor, try taking the TDC (Top Dead Center) out and give it a clean (never did find it though, even with a Haynes manual)
I plan to look at this tonight as aparently the crash box eats into themBlaque wrote:c) Clean ECU terminals
Checked them last night and no joy,Blaque wrote:d) Take out, clean and replace all solinoids and fuses that are under the cover behind the battery
