S2 water pump
S2 water pump
Clark is here at the moment, he has just fitted Hamish's borrowed Spax shocks to keep me mobile until my new Nitrons come through. He is now doing an oil and filter change on his own car, but his undertray was wet, and it looks as if it is coming from the water pump. Could be a bearing or seal that has gone, but he thinks that it is an engine out job to change it.
I can not believe that it would be that extreme, but I would be grateful if anybody could give an answer.

Re: S2 water pump
Most likely the seal for where the thermostat goes into the engine. At the back of the car this is underneath the inlet manifold to the offside. Pipe going into the block has a large o ring which hopefully needs replaced. Alledgedly can be done with the intake box in place but would be easier to remove. Also a seal on the inlet maniold gasket is prone to failing this is at one end of the manifold going into the head but dont remember which you will see a small 15mm pipe.Hope this helps. Craig.

Re: S2 water pump
Thanks Craig, will print this off for him. He has a standard 118hp K engine, so does that apply to his car?

Re: S2 water pump
Yep all on standard car. The stat and oring Im thinking about is just the other side of the water pump which is at the rear of the engine. If its leaking at the front of the engine it could be the gasket as Ive had 2 leak beside cylinder no 1, he might just see a small jet of water underneath the alternator. Im not at home or would have come over, while your there we are having a party sat, you verian and the boys coming?

Re: S2 water pump
If it is the water pump, be careful, the cambelt runs on the water pump pulley and if it fails then you have a cambelt failure, but I would expect you would be able to hear a failed bearing . . . have rarely seen K series water pump seal failures, have seen water leaks from the water pump retaining bolt (the bottom one IIRC) which is a co-axial bolt with the cam cover, sometimes both can be loosened when removing the cover . . . changing the thermostat housing (and thus O-ring) is a real pain with the engine in the car but it is possible, I've done it myself, twice, and it is an unpleasant job . . . removing the inlet mani or part of it can help if possible in he S2 . . . ref water leaks from the coolant jacket near the alternator, yeah, this happens but later castings (certainly before the end of the S1 run) were changed to mitigate this issue (more casting overlap), so while it is not impossible, it is less likely than on an older S1 . . . in short, he need to find the leak before jumping to conclusions

Re: S2 water pump
right thats me home, in desperate need of a shower now,
i think i was a little hasty with the water pump assumption, its just i know my car needed a water pump before i got it, this was done in 2007, car was poorly maintained prior to me and also had head gasket falure, all was replaced prior to me getting it,
its interesting you should mention loose bolts as i noticed when i was trying to find the source of the leak, that the water was around a bolt head, i just presumed it had just been sprayed there or ran round it on its way to the ground, i shall have a better look tomorrow in the daylight and see if anything needs tightening up,
other than that the car is running reall smooth after tonights service, no more tappet niose after the flush, oilchange and the addition of ZX1 micro oil.

Re: S2 water pump
Thanks to Hamish and Clark I now have Spax's on my car so it is mobile again. Will get the exhaust hanger welded, then John can fit a new CV tripod joint next week.

You must have missed this post Craig.

"Alas as though FF was not looking too likely for me, the decision has now been taken out of my hands.
I have just got the date for my MRI scan and Specialist appointment which is the 11th August, which I obviously have to keep. However it does mean that you will not have to put up with previous situations that tut managed to get in, and it will probably reduce Robin's work load.
Pretty sure though that with the characters going you will have a great time and do S_E proud."
