MOT failure !

Post by DavieK » Wed Jul 08, 2009 10:04 pm

Well the S160 went for it's MOT today and failed on a knackered front number plate and the horn doesnt work. Now the plate is easy enough to get sorted just to get through the test but the horn is another matter. Searching through old threads (normally full of replies from Robin) I've worked my way along and it looks like the horn itself is goosed as im getting 12V at the terminals that fit onto the horn.

So can anybody tell me if the horn is from some parts bin that i can pick up cheap and fit so that it will get through this damn MOT.

Cheers in advance.

P.S. I found a 2 wire plastic connector dangling loose round about the horn, they run down together with the horn wiring but i have no idea what they are for. any ideas ? I'll post a picture later when i get a second.

pick up any old horn or some horns and just bolt it in place, connecting it up.

Even better I have a set of air horns somewhere that play a tune :D

I always think the horn sounds kinda French :-)

It is actually made in france

think ive sorted it though ! battery i tested the horn with was flat  so the horn is OK now that ive tested it with a better battery and I know im getting 12V at the connectors so I've cleaned up the connections and will now await a more child and neighbour friendly hour to try the thing out.

If you want to test the circuit without the horn going mental you can always put test lamp in place of the horn (or just any old car bulb); then when you press the horn button, the light should come on.

Not that yours will be the same, but the wiring on mine was pretty corroded under the fuse box.

Fits into my definition* of an Elise problem as the wheel had to come off the remove the fuse box. Wire pretty much fell apart in my hand :o
New bit wire and a soldering iron, it makes a noise now ;)

*it seems you have to remove the wheel for everything.
fan belt replacement and tightening - remove wheel
check horn is working - remove wheel
take out fuse box - remove wheel
fix boot release cable - remove wheel
and all on a car that doesn't come with a jack!

I'm waiting for the S3 Elise where you have to remove a wheel to take the soft top off...
