Tyres
Tyres
Hi there,
What tyres would you recommend for my s1 elise, i will be doing occasional track days and lots of b-road miles. I used to run Toyo proxes T1-Rs on previous cars and found them quite good, but i have read that due to the soft side wall on them they take away the initial turn in away from the car. Any suggestions would be lovely.
Cheers Danny

Re: Tyres
I am tempted by the toyos, because of my previous experiance with them i found them to be a good tyre. And the price is good as well.

A useful thread would be this one...

I had a decision to make as I have always had AO48's but they're getting expensive now and I was going on holiday and going to do around 2000 miles. The result was I went for the T1R's and I admit they are not nearly as good as the AO48's but on the road you dont really notice difference in grip unless you are taking things at naughty speeds. You'll notice the difference on track, but again I went round the Nurburgring a few times and I wasnt disappointed.

Re: Tyres
Flavour of the month at the moment and recommended by quite a few including McApe, are the KUMHO ECSTA SPORT KU 31 from Camskills at less than £200 for a set.
They are a good road tyre, and will handle the track as well, but like any non R tyre, they will go off more quickly on the more powerful cars.

Re: Tyres
One more question,
would anybody recommend going for 195/50/15 and 225/45/16 or stick with the origional sizes

Re: Tyres
Think you'll find that if you go to an R spec tyre that will be all you can fit as they don't come in 175 section. Road tyre will be different but that's the sizes I'm running along with everyone else on R spec's.

Re: Tyres
Danny,
The Toyos are great. Can't comment on the Kumhos but at that price you could well give them a try, they won't be any worse I'd have thought, if Neil has given them a
Although he drives like a granny...
Anyway, on sizes, many S1 Elises are on 195 and 225 tyres...these are the only sizes for many of the popular tyres, especially the 195 front. Going up to both sizes at the same time will have a neutral effect on handling. Leaving 185s on the front and putting 225s on the back will allegedly allow a little more understeer (at least in the dry...in the wet you may find front end turn-in improves). This is popular for people unaccustomed to rear-drive. Putting 195s on the front and leaving 205s on the rear will induce a bit more oversteer, again at least in the dry...so if you like it lairy, that's the way to go!
I have 195 and 225 on my car and wouldn't change a thing now.
