MIL Light

Post by Deany1986 » Tue Jun 30, 2009 11:26 pm

Hi, went quite a long run tonight up to loch lomond then along the A811 then onto the A81 and then the A821 for Dukes Pass then continued north and then back round to the west of loch lomond. Was a really good drive :D , well until I was literally 2mins from my house and the MIL light came on

The light is not flashing and is just continuosly lit. I have been reading on SELOC that the throttle sensor seems to be quite common in causing this and disconnecting and reconnecting the throttle sensors can sometimes sort this, along with re-flashing the ecu and changing the pedal sensor and so on... Anyone on here had similar problems? Have also noticed occasionally that my car seems to idle slightly higher than it used to.

Any ideas on what i can do or check as wouldnt mind sorting this out without having to go back up to edinburgh (120 mile round trip), as ive already in the last month been in for a service and mot, had the car in for a week to get the main block oil seal replaced and then back in again over night to get a leak in the sump fixed, so fair to say would like to avoid going back up again.

Any suggestions on what to do or check are much appreciated,

Cheers, Kevin.

Mine did something similar recently. The MIL then cleared itself - I think it does this after about 5 engine restarts if the fault has cleared. The fault codes are still stored though so you can have a look next time you can get to a reader - I've got one which you're welcome to use but I'm probably a bit far away.

/waits to be corrected

Thanks for the reply Neil, hopefully it will clear itself after five restarts then. Will disconnect and reconnect the throttle sensor as well tommorow and failing that i think i might be visiting Murrays again.

Oh and where did you get your reader from? Thanks for offering the use of yours though as you said you are quite a bit away from me.

There's bound to be someone on here close to you with a reader. I ended up buying one of these. It's just standard OBD so any garage should be able to hook up to it and read the codes off.

Thanks to frank (Cisco) for using his reader to get my fault codes. Got the codes P2122 (throttle/sensor/low input) and P2106 (throttle actuator control, forced limited power). Everything else seemed fine. When revving the car it was showing no response on the reader.

Reset the MIL light, however again just before getting home the light came on and this time the car went into limp mode.

Will need to try and find someone who has had a similar problem to check how to resolve this.

Hopefully i dont have the same trouble as you Andy :( , though bit of me is expecting it not to be a simple solve. As car has been going into limp mode decided to give Murrays a call earlier on today. Car will be going in for a ecu reload as the first attempt to resolve it. I have a feeling though that the sensor might need replaced as my codes seem similar to a few on SELOC who have ended up having the sensor changed and some the full pedal box.

Kevin,

As we saw, the sensor which drives the "absolute throttle position" is either dead or its connection to the ecu is broken.

I guess this is the sensor in the throttle body. I dont know if there is a sensor in the throttle pedal assembly but would assume that is just a potentiometer?

Good idea to let Murray's know ahead of time to be sure they have a spare sensor available.

Good luck with this.

Take care,

Frank

Hi Frank,

Spoke to Craig earlier on at Murrays and told him the two codes that we got and what each one stood for and said i thought it was the sensor which was knakered. He had said that they had not had many cars in needing replaced sensors and an ecu reload would often resolve the problem.

I have however to phone back tomorrow as the laptop with the reader may be out on another job tommorow. I will try and get them to have a spare sensor before i take the car in.

Thanks again,

Kevin.

Problem seems to be fixed now :D ,

moved the car out this morning to go to murrays with MIL light on, then parked car up in street and turned ignition off to move other car back in drive and on restarting the car the MIL light went off. Only thing I had done last night was disconnect and reconnect the connecter behind the throttle pedal, however had allready stopped and restarted the car 5 or 6 times after this with light on so not sure if that made any difference, worth a try though i suppose if anyone experiences similar problems.

Continued to Murrays anyway and they reloaded the ecu software as although the light had went off Craig said it is likely it would come back on sooner or later without the ecu refresh.

Another thing i had read up on is that depending on the ECU firmware version this can cause problems. Earlier A and B versions have a ghost DBW MIL problem and updating to a C129 revision can solve the problem (taken from SELOC)

Cheers,

Kevin
