Handling help.

Post by Stumpy Nugget » Tue May 12, 2009 8:38 am

Wondering if there was someone out there who could help point me in the right direction. Last night I was out enjoying the sun and ended up going just that little bit faster than normal  . However, I noticed that at speed the car does not feel as stable as I would hope. Basically, I would describe it as "wallowy" or generally soft at the front end going around corners. I have only had the car for about 6 weeks and I was planning to strip out all the suspension this winter, but I generally am worried that if I pushed the car at the moment then I would probably end up in a hedge. It might just be the case that this is the way the car is???????

I have looked at the anti roll bars bushes and they seem to show cracks in the rubber so they will probably be going soon after this posting, my rear passenger shock shows some sweating but would like to hang out of that if possible until the winter. Everything else appears to be ok, Ball joints, track rod ends, wheel bearings, no play in the steering rack etc...

I dont want to just throw parts at it just now as I wanted to take my time and do it right when I am not wanting the car on the road later in the year.

Any advice? Cheers.

It sounds like the shocks/springs with the "wallowy" feeling that you describe, although it should come on gradually, not suddenly feel noticeabl. The anti roll bar bushes do break up, mine did on the way to KH last year so I took the bar off and it was still OK on track.

If it was an S1 I would say do not mess around but get new shocks, one of the best upgrades you can do that will transform the car as old Konis were pretty dire. However the S2 had better suspension, so I suggest that you get somebody within distance of you and a bit of experience to check it out for you and pin point the problem.
