Crankshaft oil seal

Post by Shug » Mon May 11, 2009 12:09 pm

Anything major to note when replacing one, or is it a case of hoik the old one out and press the new one in evenly?

Danke. :cheers

Fit dry.

You're going to need to drop the engine too - unless you have it removed at present?

I might consider giving the oil pump the once over at the same time - DVA has some mods to the oil pump on his site - wouldn't bother normally, but seeing as how you're down there.

Good luck removing the timing gear ... the last one I removed needed a lot of persuasion and the backplate looked distinctly non-flat ;-)

Cheers,
Robin

Flywheel end (guess it's the rear seal, technically?) You talking about the other end?

Put some sort of sealant around the outside edge of the seal before you fit it. Silicone sealant will do or Hylomar blue if you have some.

It will take quite a bit of force to get the new one in so you may need to tap it with a hammer. Might be worth using something as a drift to get it in even although I have had no problems in the past just tapping gently all the way round.

Cheers Dan,

Have some sealant left over from the gearbox - will use that.

I found when fitting mine that with the outer edge coated with sealant it went in with even thumb pressure. Was expecting to have to press it in but it's not that tight. Like Dan says you might need to tap it in, just watch and not roll the inner lip.

The manual says to fit dry - but by that it means not with engine oil as lubricant, I suppose, rather than not with silicone ... (it doesn't suggest using a sealant, but I don't suppose it will hurt).

Do you need some Isoprop Alcohol to degrease it all first?

The manual tells you to apply a continuous bead of sealant, GAC 8000 (Silicone RTV) to the replacement seal behind the front lip so not sure which manual you have Robin :?:

Sorry - my mistake - I read the bit on fitting the front seal recently and thought shug was talking about that one - even after he told me he wasn't - next you'll tell me the front seal needs a sealant too - memory must be fading fast :-)

As you were ...
