Exhaust repair solution.... non-Lotus

Post by jj » Sat Jan 24, 2009 3:16 pm

Folks,

Got a bit of a problem with my borrowed W124 E class - the centre section of the exhaust has disintegrated.

Whilst this is fun and games as it sounds hilariously awesome, I cant give it back to my mate broken, so need to fix it.

Is this sort of damage repairable (I know you can get bandages and wire to sort pipes) but this looks tricky as it is where the pipe meets the box.

All help grateful, or if anyone has an exhaust off a petrol or diesel 124 let me know....

There is a slip joint on the left hand side of the photo and a bolted flange bit at the right.

Short length of pipe and a good welder. Should be bodgeable.

If there is any movement in the back section you may be able to open up the hole a bit and slip the pipe into the box (!) and weld it in place :thumbsup

I thought about that but with that much cruddy flakeyness it's going to be difficult to weld no? Especially with the amount of movement you get with an exhaust... :?

\I'm trying to remember the post you put up years ago about the maintenance comments about the Tornados. Topping up the 'no loss' hydraulics etc.. \

Just because I have moved to Typhoon you think its any different?

I agree that finding some steel to weld to might be tricky but I'd have a go... don't know how successful it'd be...

Oh and the most important thing to remember:

When it stops leaking - it's run out...
