Petrol cap lock

Post by Scotty C » Fri Jun 20, 2008 9:53 am

Filled up with fuel last night, nornal Unleaded as shell have ran out of Vpower in the NE.

Went to lock the petrol cap and it was sticking and would not lock (was not fully turning) forced it a little and this happened?

I now have a full tank but can not get the cap off the car. I did manage to get the lock off the key thou.

I have not looked at it yet but does anyone know how to get the cap off?

I would suggest that the nut has fallen off the back of the lock barrel and the lock itself siezed.

You should be able to squirt some thing like WD40 or plusgas in there and free it up then insert the lock (with the key in) and unlock it.
Worth a try and the key shouldn't get stuck...

Sorry I should have said.

There was about 3 or 4 small broken pieces came out the bottom of the hole at the end of the barrel.

I have spoken to MMC, looks like i need a new cap but might be able to use the barrel, that would save having to carry an additional key just for the petrol.

All you need to do is find a way of turning the internal gubbins, a bug screwdriver might do it. The capo is essentially unlocked (Or de-locked!) so you just need to operate the latch.

Unless its the internal gubbins that have broken??

I had to fudge the door locks on the Porker so I didn't have 4 different keys for a 2 door car...
Now I have 3 keys...

Scotty

How much was the fuel cap? Can they not get the fuel cap to match your existing key by giving them the code?

I lost my fuel cap at KH last night

Same happened to me a couple of months back and had to get a new cap - there are only 5 different locks apparently but - sods law- they weren't able to get me the right one so now have 2 keys instead of one. Maybe a petrol cap swapping party for those similarly inflicted would be the answer :thumbsup

Lock broke before I filled with petrol, after 10 mins of trying to get the cap off, embarrasment, and the big queue waiting to get petrol, got the better of me  and I drove home with like a granny, hoping petrol fumes can keep an Elise running for 30+ miles.
