Track shed...

Not my S1, but a cheaper one
A mate of mine is very keen to get into the track scene but hasn't got the funds to buy an elise. So, I was thinking of recommending a 106 as a good place to start for Hot Hatch days etc. There's an XSI on PH at the mo with 76k miles for £400... bit of a bargain I thought, but I guess its all relative.
To make it into a track car, i was thinking we'd need to get sticky tyres, change the suspension, add f&r ARBs and potentially (i.e. cash permitting) a cage, seats & harnesses...
Anyone got any knowledge of the Pug scene that could coomment on the likely cost to convert?
Otherwise, if this is a daft idea, let me know... as I quite fancy going halfers!

Look for an old ex-racer XR2?
Might need a wee bit of TLC but will have the safety gear installed?

good shout mate ... only prob would be that we'd need it to be road legal for getting to & from the track

XR2 or an old Pug205 Rally slag with the safety devices already installed. Some are road legal.
Easy to spend a lot of time on this site:-

Greg
i would go down the route of Pug 205 - ideally with an Mi 16 engine - I had one and it was a real hoot but i never tracked it
There are usually a few on pistonheads reasonably cheap
I used to get all my work done by Pug Ecosse in Bo'ness who were excellent if you need help in the future

Is the GTi better than the GTa? Different engines iirc (I'm sure 1 is K-series, the other isn't.. but can't remember which is what).
Not being funny, but a Rover 200vi can be picked up for less than a bag of sand... BRM's are from 2 grand, with Rover 25GTi's not far off. All have VVC K-series on them. Or, a Rover 220 Turbo (Tomcat).
After using a BRM as a track slag in the past, I'd seriously consider getting another to strip (as it comes with a Torsen LSD, and gear ratios that let you top 70mph in 2nd)... then when you strip the interior you will get money back as a lot of MGZR/Rover 25 owners want the plush red leather interior and alloy trim.

HI Greg
If you want to chat 205's my Uncle has 2 . Ones a mi16 and the others becoming one!
If you can pony up a wee bit more and get one that is tracked prepped it will save you a huge amount of time and money.
Ali (SLS) does a lot of work on race cars of all types and specs so might be orth mentioning it to him to see if he knows of anything

Greg, have a look over at
http://www.106rallye.co.uk The main differences with an xsi are trim and engine size.
Ideally you'd be looking at addind a wishbone brace and strut brace at the front with Pug sport Group N wishbones. At the rear uprated torsion bars are expensive at £300, but most just fit a thicker ARB at about £150 (no need to touch the front ARB really). Group N rear beam mounts (and possibly a swap to a gti/vtr/vtr/late rallye disc rear beam) and Bilstein sport dampers all round. Most tend to fit eibach front springs.
http://www.106parts.com can supply a lot of the above parts now IIRC.
Stick on a pug sport system and your set
Oh yeah, or just get a 205. I sold my rally car for £1500, fully caged with GpA forest spec suspension and a skip brown GpA 1600 on twin 40ies

It was rougher than a rough thing to look at but even at that money had all the right bits.

the Gti is a 16v with front shocks (normal metro's only have hydagas) and anti roll bars, it also has a close ratio gearbox both are k-series do not touch an old 1.3 gta it's older than Ken!
there are some 1.8 Gti's knocking about

GTa has the MG metro 74bhp engine - they're only good for ripping apart and donating the engine to a mini.

Metro Gti's are pretty rare nowadays. Metro's were particularly prone to rust.....badly.
Far more surviving Pug 205s to choose from I'd have thought.

206XS one of the best cars I've ever owned (Elise apart, of course).
In the words of Tony, they're great.
