Looking to change my "other" car and taken a fancy for a Defender. Who here knows much about Defenders? Going to have a look at one on Saturday. Guy lives in Portobello, member of SORC, selling an N reg 90CSW. Anyone here a member of SORC? If so I'll PM more details of the car incase you know it.
Any guidance on what to look for would be appreciated.
Or if anyone knows of others for sale...........
Cheers
Neil

I have owned an old s3 Landrover (similar to a Defender but not nearly as new or as posh) for the past 7 years. The 1st thing that springs to mind with it is that it is fairly indestructable. I use mine for karting dogs and 'stuff' around. I have played with it off road up on the moor and on all the local farm tracks and fields. It really is fab for just going anywhere. Nothing major has ever gone wrong with it and the local landrover specialist seems to mend most things with a hammer anyhow. Living in the countryside, most of my neighbours have a landrover of sorts and is good to see them driving out of the muddy fields then straight into town shopping. Mind you, for anything other than pottering around tho, the noise would drive me daft and there really is no luxury to speak of. I think if i were looking for a second car then I would get something else unless it was going to spend at least 90% or the time off road.

I know a couple of members of SORC, send me more details if you like, I'll ask about it.
But must ask, are you sure, changing from a Volvo S60 to an old uncomfortable slow Land Rover?

Know where you are coming from in wanting a Defender - I have always fancied one myself. Curious really as I generally don't like 4x4s, especially ostentatious pimp mobiles like the Cayenne, X5 and Range Rover Sport which seem to me to be the motoring equivalent of wearing a gold chain round your neck - i.e. essentially naff. In contrast there is something honest and appealingly utilitarian about the Defender. A few years back I drove down to the south of France on a paragliding holiday with a friend in his ex-army Defender. It had been in the first Gulf war, and still had sand in evey nook and cranny to prove it. Not as bad on a long trip as you might expect, although he had swapped the seats for some comfy ones from an old Saab. I would love to have one, but it would have to be as a third car - ultimately as Jim points out I think a Defender would be a bit wearing if you drove it every day.

I had a 110 defender hardtop with the 200 tdi for a few years before it got nicked / burnt out on a trip to liverpool
500 ml trip no probs but it has to be driven great huge mirrors to see the tail back behind you and you have to plan overtaking ( very slow up hill )but once wound up will cruise at 75 mph and still get better mpg ( 28 )than most forgein 4x4
dead realiable easy to work on but lots of oil points & grease nipples
heater is very poor as is demisting , long turning circle but loads better with a 90 and a 90 is also quicker being shorter / lighter
300 tdi cracking engine and the csw 90 is the one to have will always retain good money and once you get used to it you will either hate it or love it, i enjoyed the fact you had to drive ie read the road and plan ahead. always using the mirrors althou they get along quite well once you get the hang of them
check all aspect of the chassis as there are a few mud traps so if used off road can rot
great off road and plenty of green lanes and clubs in england will tow anything
i like them crude but effective and individal
ps far better than a leaf spring version and csw the most refined

Thanks for the advise guys. I'm afraid I've done my usual impulsive thing and bought the Defender
Initial thoughts are it's easier to drive than I'd imagined. Hope it doesn't get too tiresome on long runs

but looking forward to getting it off road

.
Anybody with a 4x4 on here actually use it off road? Where do you go? Going to try Glentarkie

Glentarkie is good but it can get extreme quite quickly - that's where the avatar pic was taken. It took 24 hours to recover it and involved dragging it backwards on it's side for about 20 yards. The battle scars added to it's street cred - your machine will get scratched on the bushes etc.
The place is dead during the week, which is fine if you want peace and quiet to practice, but it's best to go at the weekend as there'll be people to help you if you get into trouble. Oh, and take lessons first! They are a good bunch of guys, very willing to help.

Hi Neil, join SORC, they have plenty of events during the year, with a range of activities, for basic road cars to the extreme off-roaders.

The other club that has loads of local events is
http://www.slroc.co.uk/
they are one make orientated but don't let that put you off. IIRC the SORC was started simply to allow any 4x4 to have fun.

There are 200 acres in Lamancha where you can go and practice your driving but never go to any of these places alone as you usually spend hours and hours recovering yourself from boggy ground and burns
