Ali / Ed's car died last night and it looks like the alternator is fecked. I think it is fairly new but due to the electrics not being the best its gone.

We are heading of to Dover on Monday and need one in Aberdeen for tomorrow. Dan has a spare one its just getting there and getting it fitted?

Anyone help?

Thanks

Scotty

Just spoken to Ali, he mentioned that the charge light has not been working prior to this issue . . .

Just so's y'all know how alternators and their control circuit work . . .

The current that flows through the charge light (that makes the wee light on the dash come on) is what 'switches on' the alternator . . . ie. if the charge light circuit was broken somehow the alternator would not get switched on and would not charge the battery even if it was turning . . . however once enabled the alternator is self powering (most are) and will continue to generate even without the charge light circuit.

So . . . why mention this ?

If the charge light circuit has failed there may be nothing wrong with the alt in the car. . . 99% likely that if that is a problem then the wire from the main loom into the alternator (the thin wire NOT the big thick brown one) may have broken very close to the alternator (vibration issues - quite common) or have an intermittent contact . . .

If that were the case then it is still possible that the alt may be enabled from time to time and when that happens it will charge the bat . . .

unfortunately . . . this is quite difficult to verify with the alt in the car due to heat, space and access issues . . .

best bet is to swap it out and inspect the wiring when doing so . . . I only mention this in that if the alt is newish then it's more probable that it's a wiring problem and not the alt itself . . .

If you get 'stuck' give me a call . . .

Great thanks for that.

Ali is going to come down in the L200 and meet you tonight.

Tomorrow I am going to get a geo done at Marks and he is going to help us try and fix the shed.

I will let him know about the wire.

Thanks again.

We managed to get a new one here in Aberdeen tonight.
Wiring has now all been sorted and it's still not charging. Off to change out the alt tomorrow...

Ali

Do you have someone now to fit it?

Fitted today at Mark Hutchesons (by Mark's new guy??? Alex and me, it was a kinda job interview for Alex). Big thanks to Mark who was busy with Scotty's geo. Charging properly now. Adjusted the battery bracket and refixed the headlight which had fallen out.

I rebuilt the gear linkage (g/box end) so now have 5th and reverse instead of just 1-4. The bush had seized and the hole rounded to wasn't selecting properly (also could hit the driveshaft).

I also modded the boot release (those who've seen it will know). Now a much nicer design and involved WMD (air grinding wheel). :D

effing postal strike meant that I did not receive my spare S/C belt, nor the heat shield to fit between the exuast manifold and the intermediate drive shaft to protect the tripod CV joint.

John wrapped the drive shaft with metal tape to help prevent heat soak, but I am pissed off that the spares did not arrive that were sent up days ago.

Hope that they all contract triple syphilis.
