I think I might have bought an "F355" reg plate for the F355.

The seller says it it currently on a Retention Certificate. Idiot guide question but... once I pay for it, what exactly do I get, what do I do with it, do I have to pay anything else to put it on the car and how long does that take?

you have to take the certificate to the DVLA methinks a plate has be be either on a car (with a valid MOT) or in retention.

It is easy if you take everything into your local DVLA office. You will need to pay £25 to get the nominee changed from the guy you are buying it from to you - but this is all done at the office instantly.

I had a retention document in my name, and it took about 5 mins at the DVLA to do it all; take everything with you just in case, V5, TAX, MOT, V750.

Yep.. if it's on retention then the current owner will have already paid the assignment fee (£80) plus the retention fee. So, as above, you should just need to pay £25 for change of nominee.

Check the expiry date of the retention if you aren't planning on doing it soon (just in case).
