Thistle Aberdeen Altens... any good?

Post by gorrie » Sat Jul 28, 2007 4:09 pm

I'm off this coming week and it's Camerons 7th birthday on Monday... not planned anything... oops.

So, just called this place and managed to get bed & breakfast for 2 adults plus 2 children... family room. Seems pretty cheap @ £154 all in (cheaper than their website, or other 3rd party websites).

So, is this place any good? They've got a pool plus kids splash pool to keep them occupied, and if it's good weather we can head to some beaches up the coast... or if the shows are on at the harbour, then that would be OK.

Agree go for The Patio Hotel. Kids and Mrs 'Gorrie' will love it. Good location for fair, beach and city centre. Cars racing up and down beach boulevard will keep all entertained.

oh sh*t... I should have held off a few hours before ringing them back to book.... rang them back an hour after posting in case the room had gone. Web said it was 4 star and the reviews on LaterRooms.com seemed OK.

The problem is that I've left it so late that trying to get a 'family room' anywhere is almost impossible. The Patio has availability but it would mean splitting the 4 of us up over 2 rooms (and at 5 & 7yrs old they are too young to go on their own anyway). Plus, 2 standard rooms @ a daily rate of £123 for each room means a total price of just shy of £500 for 2 nights....

Oh well... wish me luck at the Thistle then... sounds like we'll need it !!!

Dont panic, it's not that bad, I've stayed there a few times, rooms are ok, food was fine, but a bit limited if staying for anymore than a couple of days, breakfast was good. It's a few miles from town but if you have a car that's not a problem. I stayed in the airport Thistle a couple of weeks ago and thay gave me a family room to myself, came with four beds, free box of chocolate and a bottle of wine, so no complaints from me. I'm sure all will be fine.

i was thinking of going there but read a few bad reviews online so headed to Grantown on Spey instead (which is a little off track if you are heading to Aberdeen) ...

It's only somewhere to rest your head.

St Cyrus Beach is good on the way up.

Balmedie is just north of ABZ

Or Sandend, great beach a little bit more sheltered than the east coast ones. (bout an hour and a half north of the patio though).

Well... I'm back.. went to Balmedia beach Baggy... trousers rolled up and top off. Water was friggin' freezin' though. My youngest fell in, right under... camera was pointed in the opposite direction unfortunately !!

Hotel was 'OK' for a couple of nights considering the price and the last minute booking. Breakfast was great, the room had 3 beds (2xdouble + 1 single) when I was only expecting 2 doubles. We had tea at Jimmy Chungs on 1st night, but tried out the hotel food last night.

Food was OK, but the service let it down. Very slow and un-organised. I think 75% of the staff were Polish or something, so much of the issues were probably around mis-understandings. Our main courses last night should have come to about £35, but that somehow translated to £23 including 4 drinks !!! Hey Ho....

There was a red S1 in the carpark today... 'R' reg. Anyone here?

I'll post up a pic of my half naked body on the beach later... that'll be a treat for you all ;)
