what's the law in relation to these - i've heard that they need to send you the NIP within 14 days, is that bollox?

Yup, sent within 14 days (add a couple for postage) so 16 days and your safe. Unless the car is not registered to you as it goes to the registered keeper first.

so the NIP will go to my work and probably take a few days to get to me.

what happens if they post if AFTER the 14 day period?

If the original NIP (sent to your work) was posted more than 14 days after the alleged offense it is time expired and not valid (i.e. you are in the clear).

If that is the case I suggest you write back to them stating the facts and that it is time expired. You should be able to find a standard letter on:

Is the car owned by your company, or leased by your company, if it's leased it could take a long time to get to you and still be legal.

Depending on your situation, Para 4 defence maybe a possibility, this is well explained on pepipoo.com.
