Shugmobile III being put back on the road! (with pics!)

Post by Shug » Sat Jul 07, 2007 9:48 am

If you check my sig, you'll see a wee '64 Mini nestling there with the two other beasts in the Shug stable. Well, it's been sitting on the drive for years now (with regular fettling and footering with it) so I guess it's about time I started using it! Perfect for the trundle to the station in the morning (no tax, pennies for petrol & it makes you smile when you drive it)

She should roar (fart, it's 850cc) once more my midweek (once the paperwork is sorted)

I'm chuffed far more than I should be with the thought of driving practically wartime technology on 21st century roads :) Drum brakes and big calf muscles, here we come!

and all this time I just thought you liked having a gay signature.

Is there a mini traveller forum? Do you discuss your newest ailments and moan about 'youngsters these days'?

Ditch the drum brakes on the front.... you know discs make sence!... even if for random kids walking out in front of you, expecting you to be able to stop.

When we first got the healey, it had drums all round. That was really scary.... not to mention dangerous (not that it's particularly safe anyway).

We could start our own little SE 'classic' car club   Road run anyone?

Tell me about it - my toolkit for the mini consists of a sparkplug socket, tin of WD40 and a hammer!

Yeah, but the Healey does more than 55mph

The Mini will

..eventually

....downhill

......with a following breeze!

Quite fancy a run, but I'd prefer us meeting half way somewhere (maybe you could come to the coast?) Mini & M77 don't go together... Could do the back roads, but it'd take me an hour and a half to get to you! We vould be really twee and do the picnic thing with the other halves. Seeing as you can actually pile foldup chairs and picnic hampers in the back of my practical mock-tudor estate :)

I'll have to take a month off and come up in the landy (Once it stops pissing fuel) we could have out own vintage rally

The landy has drums all round too. Normally well greased with brake fluid for extra fun. You think stopping a 900kg mini is fun, try 1.5 tons of elderly landy from 40 ish (Well indicated between 20 and 60...)

Also bear in mind the handbrake is a transmission brake, use it on the move and it just gets hot...

only car I have ever been in that had drums all round was a mini and I managed to tow it at 80mph (I was young nieve and had never towed anyone before. I was also in a hurry)in a metro, the driver of the mini had his brake pedal in the carpet to try and slow down. didn't work and I didnt notice that much, I did think to myself this thing can do at least 95 though

Well, developments - It's running fine!

Had a good fettle with it today and took it for a shakedown drive (on my own private test track, of course) Brakes are still pish, and the only thing I think I need for the MOT is a dip switch (the floor-mounted type) which is ordered and will be with me mid-week. MOT booked for Friday 8)

Not too bothered about the MOT - it last passed in 2004 and it was basically re-built for that (by the previous owner) That, plus the requirements for a '64 car are slightly more lenient than a 2000 car, makes me quite confident of a pass. That means, probably on the road for the weekend, all being equal 8)

Chuffed as fcuk. :thumbsup
