BBC reporting at its best

Post by kenny » Wed Jun 06, 2007 8:28 am

 To use a Pistonheads phrase, Todays pissboiler from the BBC

I haven't played the clip with sound (in work) but it doesn't look particularly fast or dangerous to me yet the BBC and the Police have lept in with some knee jerks comments.
The Polis wrote:It is only a matter of time before somebody is killed or seriously injured

Police spokesman

BBC rent a soundbite wrote:On a number of occasions the vehicle crosses the white lines and takes corners on the wrong side of the road.
Forgive my lack of 100% knowledge of the Highway Code but is this an offence? The white lines are not solid and it would appear even from the grainy footage that the road is clear ahead.
If it is illegal then 5th Gear posted a lovely clip of Plato rattling round a corner on the wrong side of the road on Monday night, better get the Beeb on it

can't see it as surf control nerfs youtube at work, but I presume its someone recording themselves on the open road? If so, I think we're all savvy enough to know its not a sensible idea :?

Didn't have sound on either but it looked pretty tame to me.

I remember my driving instructor showing me a bit of pass plus stating "it's not illegal to drive on the wrong side of the road if nothings coming" unless it's a solid line of course.

Although, there are an increasing number of knobends filming themselves doing increasingly stupid things...

I got bored after a couple of minutes. Louise drives her 1 litre corsa quicker than that! Bloody Beeb...must be a slow day for news.

If any one lives near there, I would like to get them to drive that stretch of road, keeping within the law, and time that section. I'll bet it will be quicker than the driver in the footage.

Hmmm...that seems to be at quite 'normal' speeds.

He hugs to crown of the road on straights where there is nothing coming which is fine.

He doesn't cause other drivers to swerve out of his way.

He uses the 'full width of the road' to gain "maximum line of visibility' which is, I believe, a technique advocated by Police Class One drivers.

It should be easy enough to work out his appoximate speed via road marking etc - I'd guess that, at the most, he's doing about 75-80mph. On a quiet, dry, 2 lane B-road.....

compared to the story about the neep filming himself at 150mph in his VX, I would say this is a nothing-ness.

*I in no way condone dangerous driving and have not stated whether or not I condone this video, nor whether I believe it is, or should be, legal.

I'm enraged by that news coverage. Must be a "quiet news day".

As has been posted above, the speeds were nothing significant at all and frankly his lines and smoothness of driving looked like they were out of the Police Manual or the IAM.

Although the footage is low res, any corner where he moved his line of sight by crossing the - broken - lines, was one where the exit point was more or even fully visible by doing so.

Total tosh.

This is the kind of thing that makes me want to sell the car altogether, it seems it is no longer socially acceptable to enjoy the skill of driving. How long before golf is outlawed because of the risk of being hit on the head by a wayward slice etc etc.

Fecking Barstewards.

PS B729 Moniaive to Carsphairn is quite nice but he'd be better belting along A702 from Thornhill or A712 ;-)

The police should keep their mouths shut.

Completely agree that there is nothing this guy is doing wrong. You are allowed to use the full width of the road ahead to get the best view for the corners.

I got some training from aPolice Class A Instructor on the motorbike and this is the exact technique that the police use. As you can see from the BBC website the police are condoning the filiming and not the driving of the car. If the guy was crossing an un-broken line then I am sure the police would have reported on that behaviour to the BBC.

In the end it is utter tripe the comment by the BBC. Just writing a story for the sake of it, wastes valuable web space is you ask me.
