HELP; suggestions please for sunday night ?
HELP; suggestions please for sunday night ?
Dave Evans and myself are booked on the Monday Ferry 17.30 from Newcastle back to Holland.
Sunday lunch is the last commitment of the TT week-end,
so we have a spare night/day to spend between Breamar and Newcastle .
we were thinking about spending the Sundaynight in Edinburgh, have a night out / drink. Then drive to Newcastle on the monday.
who has a suggestion where we could stay (hotel?) close to drinks / bar in or near edinburgh with safe(ish) parking ??
or maybe somewhere else ?
cheers

Edinburgh is a nightmare for last minute booking Bob I'm afraid - I've tried to organise hotels etc for my mum and dad with a week's notice to no avail sometimes. Best bet is probably to use lastminute.com (really!). Places like the 'Scotsman' and the balmoral will have secure parking in the city centre, but you'll pay a premium (£180-ish a night). I think some of the MacDonald Hotels (a chain) have off street parking, but again not cheap; you'll be noticing an Edinburgh theme here...
Another option would be to use some of the NCP parking. there's a huge facility by the Edinburgh Bus Terminus where you can park overnight, and another huge one on Leith Street (close by, near the St James Centre under the wobbly footbridge). On a Sunday, you'll have no probs getting a space and that will free up your accomodation options.
Try the Raddison on the High Street, or the Ibis for more 'reasonable' prices (its all relative....) or there's good old faithful Travellodge/Travel Inn - though I don't have a clue where they are
Oooh... there's one out by the Western Approach Road (near the Edinburgh International Conference Centre) that has an NCP next to it. That's near Lothian road where you'll find plenty of places to amuse you...

Bob,
I got a lastminute room at the Caledonian Hilton for £110 a few weeks ago - it was called a "secret deal" on lastminute.com , all it said was a 5 star hotel with pool in Edinburgh, so fairly easy to work out where. Was very nice and good value and has parking (free if you are in elise as you can get out under the barrier!).
Some clients of mine stayed there earlier this year and said it was pretty good. It certainly has a great location bang in the middle of Edinburgh's old town.Bob vanM wrote:thanks JJ,
just had a look at the Apex City Hotel , grassmarket
looks good, near centre and with carpark ( I just don't know if that is a rather secure carpark)
£ 117 for a single room sounds ok,
anybody knows this hotel ?

I just checked lastminute.com for that date, and they are doing the "Top Secret deal" for £113 - not bad for a 5star hotel in city centre! I dont know where the capark could be for the apex, as there is not one near it apart from the NCP on King Stables Road?
There are two Apex hotels in the Grassmarket, can't remember which one is called what, but both have some parking behind them, not a lot, so if you could book the parking space Bob, I would do it. I wouldn't want to leave my car parked in the Grassmarket overnight.jj wrote:Bob,

Green Subaru Impreza Turbo, a 'classic'.

Bob, i've stayed at the apex city in the past. The hotel it's self is fairly nice, but with a fantastic view from the restuarant at the top. The parking is behind and below the building, but there aren't so many spaces, and it's fairly tight, but as has been said there's an NCP not far away.
I might end up staying the sunday in Edinburgh as well, will see how things pan out.
