Induction Kits... Suggestions Please...

Post by Edin430 » Sun May 27, 2007 12:51 pm

Hello everyone!! :D

Just having a scan through the internet to find myself a good induction kit... Was hoping i could get some ideas??

Been told the Hurricane Induction Kit is my best bet (eliseparts do them i believe?) However i have seen a Pipercross one that is suppose to be the business!! AND just to make things more confussing ive been passed the number of someone who builds custom stainless steel kits - and would do me a good deal!! What'd you think??

Oh and will it switch any ECU lights on etc if i change it......

Ta :D

On a K-series engine the induction won't switch on the MIL or otherwise cause problems.

The best upgrade is to switch to a K&N or other metal panel filter in the standard airbox, and then, if you want, modify the air intake pipe to the box to be more direct and use a larger diameter pipe (this comes at the cost of ingesting extra grit/rain/small mammals into the airbox).

Cone filters without airboxes make the engine run badly at low engine speed/low throttle openings.

Typical cone filters with cylindrical airboxes have less volume in the air box and lower gap from the filter surface to the air box walls which will force the airflow to bend, so while they look ideal, they may well not be from an airflow perspective.

Panel filters generally favour flow, though of course the standard air box does have the 90 degree turn at the top, so still not ideal.

The ITG filter is probably a good compromise - it has a nice bulky air box, so plenty of volume, and a reasonable gap between the filter and the side walls, as well as a large flat area towards the intake end.

Cheers,
Robin

I waded on for one with the 111r but it caused more issues than benefits.

Interestingly we ditched the k&N cone off the RLC and went for the standard (slightly animalised) airbox with a k&N panel filter.

Seems to be working quite well :D

I'd agree with the ITG recommendation.

Not cheap but had real tangible benefits over the K&N that i had on before in terms of pickup and "smooth-ness"

Granted this was on an astra lump rather than a metro one but it should still stand

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

oi.. I like the theory about the air gap etc, but I'm afraid it's not correct when talking about the Hurricane kit.

One of the things which has received a lot of extra attention was the airflow. People who know the first version and current version will know that we have in fact changed the design of the 'nose'. This was done to improve the airflow. (specifically for the Toyota engines!)

In terms of volume, we have actually tested the kit on a flowbench when we started doing them. Afterwards, the kit has been RR tested with both NA and S/C Honda's (work done by Sinclaires at the time). Hurricane came out as best in class :)

And what difference was there on the rolling road between the hurricane and the standard airbox with a metal filter?

Cheers,
Robin
