Midweek break in July.. comments please

Post by gorrie » Tue May 15, 2007 9:36 pm

I've got some BA points to spend... and I've got enough for a couple of return flights to some european places. Thinking on taking the wife away for a few days the 1st week in July as I'm off work.

Being a complete uncultured type of guy... I thought I'd ask for some opinions on the following destinations:-

Amsterdam
Basel
Brussels
Copenhagen
Dresden
Dublin
Dusseldorf
Frankfurt
Geneva
Hamburg
Jersey
Marseille
Milan (Linate or Malpensa)
Munich
Oslo
Reykjavik
Stockholm
Turin
Vienna
Zurich

On the list was also Paris but the wife doesn't fancy there.... been to Dublin a couple of times and would rather not waste the points on going again coz we may take the kids to Dublin during the last week of July anyway.

Any comments on the above destinations greatly appreciated... negatives also. Basically looking for a cool/nice place to spend a few days without kids... 2 of us are mid-30's so are past the raving.. but still like a beer/wine, places to coffee and eat, and places for the wife to buy woman type things.. (bags, shoes, nail polish and the like).

Cheers, Andy.

Berlin doesn't feature on the BA list unfortunately... although Aberdeen did ;)

I did not fancy Paris at all. However it was my wifes 40th, and thats where she wanted to go. IT was fantastic, and i would go there again.

I have been to Milan, and would recommend it.

Also on the list I'd fancy going to, Basel, Reykjavik and Stockholm.
Green Subaru Impreza Turbo, a 'classic'.

Silver Jeep Cherokee 2.5 TD, on SORN spec...

Black Disco 3, black van man spec...

Stockholm would get my vote! Been twice and absolutely love it, although having been in February and April, I preferred the colder wintery feel to the city in February. But a beautiful (if slightly expensive) place to visit any time of year :)

I was in Rome in March. Great city but then again I love Italy. It will be getting busy this time of year.

Barca will be my next city break. now that you can fly direct from ABZ.

Cheers guys... that gives a short list to google on... I would have been there googling all day on the initial list. Anyone been to Marseille ?

I had thought perhaps Munich... but the beer festival doesn't start until around September, so not sure what else there would be there in July.

Still lots of beers and beer halls to try - but otherwise strong on culture - galleries, architecture and in July is their Opera Festival.

Stockholm is a lovely place, unfortunately it was on business but did not get much sight seeing. Only thing to bear in mind is the additional expense of accomodation + food. Luckily I was on Business expenses but went to TFI Friday on night (late back from office and only place open), meal for 2 of us - 2x Cajun Salmon, 2 x cranberry, 2x beers, 1 Irish Coffee, I normal coffee and the bill came to something like £70.

However the city is really nice, lovely bars, scenery, scandanavian women. On my list of citys to return to and do some sight seeing.

Would not recommend Frankfurt as it was not very interesting.

Cafe Opera has unbelievable scenery
Schoomer,

Well worded. I have spent a lot of time out in Cape Town on business and I thought that the South African women were absolutely lovely until I want to Stockholm
